Nessel, Beckwith master Motomasters MX By Greg Nelson MAPLEVIEW, NY, APR. 2 GP Racing's ScOll Beckwith won the 250cc Amateur class at Motomasters MX opening motocross. After a wet practice. the sand track was in excellent condition. Adirondack CyclerrNT-sponsored Paul Vanhatten holeshot the first moto. Behind him was a tightly knit pack of bikes, and Beckwith was at the tail end charging. After the second lap he was up to fourth. As VanHallen kept opening up his lead, Beckwith was pressing on,-ending up second at the moto's end. MOLD two saw Beckwith motor out £rOnl with john Young close behind. VanHatten took advantage of a restart and was back in sixth. Youn~ pushed Beckwith hoping for a mistake whIch happelled on the thIrd lap when Beckwith tipped over. Young pulled away leaving Beckwith -in second, close to a hard-charging VanHatten. The moto ended with Beckwith second earning the overaU ahead of a disappointed VanHallen. Doug Fleming pulled a giant holeshot in the l25cc Expert class. Right away Terry Kuhn passed him as did Steve Nessel and Rob Nessel. KH Kawasaki/Malcolm Smith/Precision Performance/GP Racing-backed Rob kept the gas on into the mud passing his brother. By the end of the second lap Rob was out in fronL Gear/Maxima/Smith/Conklin Cycle/GP RacinglMirabito Fuel's Kuhn stayed close to Nessel while Anthony Chown moved into third. Goldstein Kawasaki's Larry Maxwell was dogging Chown ending up third on the last lap. Moto twO saw F1emi'ng holeshot again with the Nessel brothers right behind. Rob passed Fleming, Maxwell passed Steve, and Mallots/ AXO/GP Racing Bruce Strallon Dew into fourth. By lap four, Strallon was in third and gaining on Maxwell. Rob Nessel swapped off in t'he whoops, handing the lead over to Maxwell. Strallon wicked it on at this poinL Maxwell fought hard but couldn't hold off Strallon's charge.
