BYP4IP4I WfflLfY Belgian Dirk Geukens (Hon) was the overall winner in the opening round of the World Championship 500cc MX Series in Valkenswaard, HoIland, April 2. Geukens went 4-1, while defending World Champion Eric Geboers (Hon) of Belgium took second via a 2-6 tally. Third overall went to Holland's John Van den Berk (KTM). Australian Jeff Leisk (Hon) won the second moto and was leading the first moto with one lap remaining before running out of gas. American Billy Liles (Kaw) finished ninth in the second moto. American Trampas Parker (KTM) won both motos in the opening round of the World Championship 125cc MX Series in Faenza. Italy. April 2. Second overall went to Holland's Davey Strijbos (Suz) with a 3-2. while Italy's Alessandro Puzar (Suz) finished third with a 2-3. American Mike Healey (KTM) went 4-6 for fourth. Frenchman Jean-Michel Bayle (Hon), the 1988 125cc MX World Champion who spent the winter competing in the U.S., broke his arm on March 23 when he crashed while practicing in France for the upcommg World Championship 250cc MX Series, which begins April 16, in Payerne, Switzerland. It is not yet certain whether or not Bayle will be abl~ to compete in Switzerland. point standings with 29 points•. Rodney Farris is second with 21 and Kiser moved into third by earning 20 points for his victory in Georgia. On Monday, March 27, the California Assembly Transportation Committee approved, by a 11-4 vote, a bill that would require all motorcycle riders and their passengers to wear helmets. Assemblyman Richard Floyd's (D-Carson) bill, AB8, is identical to the bill that was vetoed by Gov.ernor George Deukmejian last year. The bill now goes to the Ways and Means Committee. Kevin Brett, the governor's press secretary, 'said, "Unless there is compelling new information, this bill will meet the same fate as last year's bill." Japanese 250cc Grand Prix winner John Kocinski will make his 500Cc GP debut at the West German GP on May 28. Kocinski will ride a Team Roberts Yamaha YZR500 at the Nurburgring and then at the Salzburgring on June 4 in the Austrian GP. Kocinski's only other 250cc GP ride will come at the April 1"6 U.S. GP at Laguna Seca. Three-time AMA Hare 8t Hound National Champion Dan Smith (KTM) was the overall winner in round three of the National Championship Hare 8t Hound Series in Murphy. Idaho. April 2. Second place went to larry Roeseler (Kaw). while Ted Hunnicutt (Kaw) captured third overall and first place in the 250cc class. Scott Summers (Hon) captured the overall victory at the combined National Championship Hare Scrambles and Cross Country event (rounds two and three) in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, April 2. Brit Steve Saunders (Fan) is on top of the World Championship Observed Trials Series point standings after the first two rounds of the 12-round series. Saunders won the March 19 opener in England, topping runner-up Die$o Bosis (Apr) and third place fimsher Philippe Berlatier (Bet). Defending World Champion Thierry Michaud (Fan), who finished fourth in England, won the March 25 Irish round, with Saunders finishing second and Bosis third. Saunders goes into the, next series round in Italy on April 30 with 37 points. Michaud is second with 33 points, Bosis third with 32 and Jordi Tarres (Bet), who finished sixth in England and fourth in Ireland, is fourth with 23. Junior class rider Kris Kiser (Ra) won the April 2 AMA 600 National Dirt Track Series round at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock. Georgia. Experts Dave Hebb (HD) and Terry Poovey (H-D) finished second and third. respectively, in the short track final. Tyson and Tallon. have signed .a contract with American Yoko A joint effort by CORVA and the U.S. Forestry Service to improve the Johnson Ridge Route (motorcycle trail 2OWI2) will take place beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, April 29, at Halfmoon Campground, Mt. Pinos Ranger District, in the Los Padres National Forest'(LPNF). The Gorman-area trail winds down to the Sespe Hot Spring and to within onehalf mile of the Sespe River. The LPNF Land Management Plan of last year revealed that preservationists wished to make the trail their . own, by making the entire area a wilderness. Users who wished to save the trail enlisted the help of Republican Congressmen Robert Lagomarsino and Elton Gallegly who have introduced a bill which although it proposes that the wilderness be established, also mandates a two-year study of the OHV trail and the alternatives to closure. The weekend project will consist of building a barricade, signing, and major trail work. Volunteers must bring a motorcycle to gain access to the work areas. To reach the site, take 1-5 to the Frazier Park exit. Three miles past the town of Frazier Park, turn left on Lockwood Valley Road and go about 9.5 miles to Forest Road 7N03. Go left and follow event signs for about 10 miles to the campground. Bring water, lunch and brush cutters; dinner will be provided by the USFS, Saturday night. Movie actress Kim Basinger, who starred in Blind Date, 912 Weeks and The Natural, recently purchased most of the town of Braselton, Georgia, for $20 million. So what, you say? Well, Braselton is next to Road Atlanta. No, the road race track wasn't part of the deal, but 1800 acres, the water and sewer system, an industrial park, several businesses and about 50 homes were. Much to the surprise of many attendees. the March 28 Santa Clarita (California) City Council meeting's agenda did not include the proposed Whitney Canyon OHV Park as was scheduled and announced in our March 29 issue. According to California Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commissioner Ed Waldheim. "The Santa Clarita City Council .found out that Cycle News had reported that the OHV Park would be discussed and in fear of many supporters showing up at the meeting. they removed the item from the agenda. We are sorry that those who attended had to sit through the meeting. but it was not in vain." , The date for the Peoria (Illinois) TT round of the AMA Camel Pro Series has been set. The Peoria M.C.promoted event will take place on August 13. The AMA National Championship Road Race Series round scheduled for July 2 at Heartland Park in Topeka. Kansas. has been rescheduled and will run over the Labor Day weekend. September 1-3. An AMA/CCS meet will be held on the original National date. The Meadowlands Ama~eur Supercross in Rutherford, New Jersey, will take place on Sunday, May 7, beginning at 7 a.m. The date change (from Saturday, May 6, prior to that night's Camel Supercross Series round, will allow a full day of racing for the large turnout expected for the amateur event. Don Hutchinson. race director of the loudon Road Race Series (lRRS). reports that construction of the New Hampshire International Raceway in loudon. New Hampshire. has been halted by a lawsuit filed by residents living in the immediate area 'of the track. That has caused some shifting of the lRRS schedule to the early part of the season in anticipation of construction of the new speedway getting underway again later this year. lRRS meets will be held on April 29-30. May 13-14. June 10-11. and July 1-2. The AMA National Championship Road Race meet will take place on June 17-18. All events will run on the old Bryar Motorsport Park course. Tentative dates scheduled are August 5-6 and September 2-3 with ltn September 4 open for an endurance race if enough interest is shown.
