Through th e week their attentio n is focused o n tires, gea ring, jetting, timing and the co mpetitio n. Little do most racers rea lize that long before th eir a rrival Roger Lyle and th e MARRC safety crew , assisted by students from American Motorcycle Institute and other corne r working crews, spend co unt less hours evalua ting track safety. As per Roger's request additional ha y bal es were . brought in and the safety crew pl aced them al ong th e unprotected guard rails . During th e week incl ement weath er set in and th e worker s remained at th eir corn er sta tio ns despite rain, wind and below normal temperatures and cont inued to assist fallen rider s a n d p ro vide track condition in formation to officials a nd riders. Many of the safety crew . work ed 10 days to pro vide for the AMA /CCS races as well as the vintage and AMA pro races. For th eir efforts these wor kers deserve a sta ndin g o vation. On behalf of the riders, manu facturers and vendors, I wish to th ank th ese hidden heroes for th eir com mendabl e effor t beyond th e call of duty to provide profession al level corn er working and a dedi cation to "Safety first!" DAVE BLACK Eastern Regional Technical Advisor Yamaha Motor Corp. USA Bridgeport,. NJ . Riding together I wou ld like to thank a very specia l gro up of Chaparral s M.e. members. I ride end ura nce horse races (50 and IOO-mile cross co unt ry races) and m y husband, a member of th e Rid gecrest M.e., races the desert hare & hound races and enduros. On February 25, our Twenty Mul e Team 100-Mile Horse Race criss cro ssed the Desert Foxes Hare & Hound cours e which was laid out for th eir race the following day. You ca n imagine that the horse people wer e nervous about our severa l passes through Charlie's Place! Well , not only were mos t motorcyclists very co urteo us, but a group of Chaparrals put out big dog bowls full of water for our horses and gave the riders ice-col d lemo nadel That small act of kindness meant so much and went a lo ng way in reversing som e negative opinions about horses an d motorcycles sharing the desert. Unfortunately, all of us recrea tionists - motorcyclists, ultra-ru n ners, mo untain bicyclis ts and endurance horse riders - are being crowded into smaller and smaller areas by a vocal group o f preservationists. Remember, by law th ere can be no compe titive even ts in a wilderness area and that includes my sport as .well as yours! As a horse person, I extend my hand to a ll of you wh o use the desert com petitively and ask that we work toge ther as friends to battle for more o pen areas in our desert. CINDY COLLINS Eastern High Sierra Distance Riders Ridgecrest , CA Ya m issed 'em I am an avid re ader of your newspaper. Being a member of the Uni ted States Arm y stationed overseas, I get th e opportunity to attend . man y international motorcycle events. Your newspaper has been a great help by providing me with a schedule of events. I would lik e to know if you cou ld help me find th e date s of a few preseason races in France. These races are not listed in your Calendar section. Your coo peration would be greatl y app reciated. The events are th e Le Touquet Beach Ra ce and the Beaucaire International MX. JEFFRY A. SMITH APO NY Th e 1989 L e Touqu et and Beaucaire races have already been run . L e T ouq uet took pla ce on Februa ry 12 and was wo n by Belgium 's Eric Ge boers on a H onda. Th e Beaucaire round of th e .Supercu p MX Series was held on February 19 and was won by H olland's Davey Strij bos on a Suzuki . . . Ed itor. Road racer Doug Tosten was invo lved in an automobile accident on Interstate 95 on his way home from Daytona Cycle Week. The Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, rider was unhurt. as was h is brother who was traveling . with him, but Tosten 's brand -new trailer struck a bridge and was destroyed a long with all of his racing equipment. Tosten will be meeting with a major corporation Colorado's Mountain Road racing Association (MRA) will pay $300 to the winner of both th e GTO and GTU divisions of th e club's premier class, the Race of th e Rockies, at each of the 10 meets sched uled for 1989. Each race will have a total purse of $2200 and will pay back 10 places. For further information, contact the MRA Hotline at 303/ 443-7446. Talk about being on a budget, Team Leon i Ducati 851 rider Jimmy Adamo used the same set of tires to win the March 5 AMA/ CCS Supertwins road race at Daytona that he used to win the Supertwins t it le at Daytona's October '88 Race of Champions. When Adamo did fit a new set of Michelin radial slicks for the first of the March 10 Arai Twin 50 Superbike Qualifiers, he promptly fell off on the warm-up lap. Later that day Adamo finished third in the AMA Pro Twins Grand Prix dice. " And th e winner is .. . " Multi-time Grand Nation al Champion Jay Springsteen ma y have picked up the $5000 lion 's share of th e Daytona 200 Dirt Track Achi evem ent Awards, but Rodney Farris was the real winner. The Cockeysvill e, Maryland, rider pocketed $3000 for bein g the thirdpl aced dirt tracker after com pleting just five laps and p laci ng 70th in the 200. Steve Mor ehead suffered transmission problems in th e race, finishing 19th and winning $3500 as the second-p lace dirt tracker. The rider who many considered a sh oo-in for th e mon ey was Doug Chandler, but Chandler was sick with th e flu and did not co mpe te. When a pace car was used for the first time in the March 12 Daytona 200. some diehard motorcycle enthusiasts wondered why it wasn't a pace bike. Said AMA/ CCS Director (and pace car driver) Roger Edmondson. " We actually considered it early on. but a bike doesn't present a big enough image to the following riders." Edmondson also reported that he met his goal as pace car driver: "I'm just happy I didn't spin out in front ofthem, " he said. Training on m otocr os s bikes is becoming in creasin gl y popular with road racers as many of those competing at Dayton a reported that they rod e dirt bik es during the o ff seaso n. Included in th e group were John Kocinski, Thomas Steven s, Richard Oliver , Dou g Ch andler , Dale Quarterl ey, Jim my Adam o and J eff Stem. Team Vice roy Yamaha's John Kocinski on passing: " Yo u have to make sure your front wheel is in front ofthe other guy's footpeg . otherwise if you hit you 'll fall down . I learned that riding at Kenny's (Roberts) and from talking to dirt trackers like Chris Carr." Koc inski put his tactics to good use in the Daytona 600cc Supersport race where he came from well back in the pack to win. Three-time World Champion Freddie Spencer tested th e 1989 Yama ha YZR500 at 'Yamaha 's iest track in Sugo, J apa n , on Mar ch 16-17 in preparation for the March 26 J apan ese GP at Suzuka. Spencer circulated half a second slower than the lap record, held by J apanese test rider T adahiko Taira. ( Con tin ued to page 4i )
