c That we had sold our old house, and in a p eculiar way found something new. I was dreading the morning when the fumigators would arrive. The place had termites and th e job had to be done - in order to close escrow , to; move on , to keep the living cycle fresh and alert. There was really no choice but to tent it over and gas the little beasts. And when they came by truck and hung the big tarps , putting all the clamps on , sand-bagging th e bottoms, I was still inside, caught in a last-minute crisis, in a dream that tim e had somehow slowed and was all m ine. Trying to finish a hundred th ings still undone - befo re getting on my motor and riding the hell away . And th e ligh t in the room just then go t oddly red. A canvas had dropped across th e windows ma king it quiet and eerie all of a sudden. And th en I knew! It became very clear that the house was no longer mine; th at it no longer belonged to m y wife, my kids, me , any of us . That weird and sudden redness of light seemed, in its own rosy way, an exterm ination of whatever it is that connects a house to its owner, boards and mortar to reason and bones. With the roll down of canvas, that bond was so quickly, and so surely, broken. And I realized then what my most recent ride had been all about, why last Sunday I' d looked differently at those houses and fields remote from home. It was a sepa ration of one way and a searching for another. A life in flux. Bridging a gap , changing before my eyes. Bu t with one Common Denominator, one element of existence that refused, and still refuses, to change. And that is TH E MO TO RCYCLE. Always there, forever new, exact ly right for w ha tever occasion, whatever twist, w hatever road. It is my balance r and equalizer, a con tin uity and lasting strength. Th e ride it gives is w hat gives life life. It cannot be sold away or traded or forgott en - or eoen fum igated with critter gas! H ah! I almost forgot where I was, her e under the tarps, th e wo rkers' faint vo ices no w giving me a fright. And in an ins tan t I'm outside and on m y bike. .H eaded west! R enewed! R evitalized! Going bad to Japan for th e GP opener! Copyright Pege 3 Productions. From an idea by Carol Simi.
