Win ela nd survived a serious endo off the doubles in moto one and was able to remount and claim the checkered flag at the end of the 10·la p mota. Both Mark Meredi th and J im Ha le had mechanical difficu lties in the mota that pr evented them from challenging for th e lead . T own and Country Ho nda-sponsored Meredith had the hub' of his rear wheel di sintegrate at the sproc ket and DNF. Jim Hale lost the banjo bo lt on his brake hos e on lap five bu t soldiered o n a' a reduced place to fourth in th e four-man class . A huge turnout of riders showed up to race o n a super-looki ng track with banked corners. In th e heat race J eff H iatt gOI th e ini rial lead followed by Rod Reyno lds, Fay and Steve Hyson. For two laps Hiatt, Reynol ds a nd Fay came down th e ba ck 'stra ig h ta way three abreas t but Fay co uldn' t make a clean pass until lap three when he made a Iantastic pa ss under both front-runners co m ing ou t of tum four. Fa y went o n to th e win ahead of Reyno lds, Hiatt and H yson . Rex Fisher and Jeff Ru ssell were th e o ther heat race winners. In the main event Reyn olds and T ro y Norris got the scra tch foll owed by Fay, Fish er, Don Wils on, T ony Thom and the ot hers . Fay wasted no time and by lap two 'wa s in co n tro l of the lead . Fisher and Wil son mo ved up behind No rris and then Reynolds went do wn hard o n the fro nt straight wh ile Ru ssell lost it o n the back stra igh t, A restart had everyo ne in single fi le and Fay was o ut quick wit h Fisher and No rr is rig ht behi nd him. Zirbel slid under Reynolds and passed Wilson but o ne lap lat er Wilson tried 'a get by Zirbel and they both went dow n.
