That m y R ide Day was set, until I by chance saw so me thi ng else. It was the Ligh t tha t go t to m e. First f rom w hat seeme d lik e fa r distan ce shutters, a faintest of blues wash ing th e black outside; th en th e bedside lamp, golden incandescence sudden ly fill ing th e room. In th e shower it was a muted gray, tired fluorescence. A t breakfast , a w ild pla y of su nrise entering th e kit ch en from an east-facing window. Then th e harder morn ing can opy lik e fre shl y lau ndered sheets . In m y garage, three dark bik es snatc hed new light from th e door. Strangely, in brief silhouette. T hen colored thems elves like rich showroom disp lays. The flam e red of an Italian painter. West German scu lpture, a pearlescent, transparent snow. .And a striking sw eep of blu e-e-uihite from Japan. Du cati, BMW, Suzuki.' Paso, RJOORS; GSXRll 00. Th e light flooded onto th em , a quick caught portrait. A nd th en th e q uest ion: Wh ich one to ride? Wh ich persuasion to foll ow ? Th e light gave no firm answer, made no decision for m e. Each bik e ran through my head without turn ing a wheel. W ith out awaken ing a motor! I stood and marveled at this frozen collection . I'd been in m useums where art had failed - thesemotorcycles did not. It was th e Light that kept me gazing at th em , holding an image that seemed to mean more than motion. Th en something changed abruptly. Th ose artists' colors faded, dropping away to shadows. ·I turned around to look - the sun hung pasted li ke a wafer of white satin, straining th rough a clo ud th at had taken its rays. A breeze brought a chill, the air felt icy fo r an ins tant. Th en our . Brightest Sta r p ierced its shro ud; brighter tha n ever now, blinding! I turned 'to th e bik es again , and saw th e ligh t shaft, and th en race across th em , giving th em odd and beaut iful m ot ion s of th eir ow n. Th ey seemed to leap ou t in th eir brill ian ce. I stood th ere, I don't know how long. And th en decidedurhat I would do . T hat I would NO T ride now. Th at th ere was no rational way to chose , no experience that cou ld be more deep ly felt than w hat I'd just had. And I closed the garage door, slo wl y, lik e a stage cu rtai n on so me gra n d performance. Indelible, remembered for ever for its perfection . For its unforgettable Light.
