Larry Roese ler (Kaw) was the overall winner in round two of the AMA National Championship Hare & Hound Series in Red Mountain, California, February 12. Second place went to Chuck Miller (Hon), wh ile third overall went to the first 250cc rider, Ted Hunnicutt (Kaw). Kurt Pfeiffer (Yam) and Kenji Gauthier (Suz) rounded out the top five. "Pappy" Hoel passed away on Wednesday, February I, in Sturgis, South Dakota. Hoel was the founder and charter member of the Jackpine Gypsies M.C., Black Hills Motor Classic and. White Plate Flat Trackers Association. Hoel was one of the first Indian motorcycle dea lers in South Dakota and he la ter became a Yamaha dealer. He was a life charter member of the AMA and was awarded the Al'1A's Dud Perkins i Award in 1983 . He was also a member of the Retreads of America and the Classic's Rally Boosters of Sturgis. .During the 1983 Sturgis R all y, Governor Bill Janklow proclaimed August 14 J.c. "Pappy" Hoel Day in South Dakota. Hoel is survived by his wife Pearl, son Jack Hoel , and brother Ed Hoe!. A memorial has been established by the White Plate Flat Trackers Association, a group of active and retired professional racers. When John Lassak Ra cing team sponsor Bob Pave was asked if the fact that he was backing three foreign riders in an American racing senes bothered him, he replied, "I never 'co n sider ed it before, but no, it doesn't. I just want to win and I'll win with whoever 'h as the best chance. I think Alan (Carter) has real shot at the title." Pave also explained the .reason behind the team 's switch from Yamahas to Aprilias: "It's no secret that (Kenny) Rober ts' team (Team Nordica Roberts) was getting parts that no one else could. They had some advantages that we just couldn't match if we. stayed with Yamaha.'.' Pave and Lassak purchased their three machines from West German Roland Busch and American Andy Leisner. Lassak accompanied U.S. Rotax importer Tony Murphy to the Ro tax factory ' this past November, and the Austrian firm has agreed to help by updating the team's motors to '89 specifications. John Lassak Racing is sponsored by Micheli n, White Bros., Bassani and Castrol. Lassak will also be providing some backdoor help on southern Californian Richard Moore's Yamaha TZ250. a Washington, has announced its 1989 Yamaha FZR600 contingency program. Any racer who buys an FZR600 from Lynwood Yamaha and scores a win in the 600cc Production class of WMRRA races held at Seattle International Raceway is eligible for $200, while a second-place finish is worth $100. For more information call 206/774-0505. Former 1 9 8 7 AMA Pro Twins Grand Prix Champion Doug Brauneck will contest the 1989 series on an updated version of Dr. John Wittner's Moto Guzzi. Called the 1000 RII . the machine features Weber fuel inject ion designed in conjunction with Maserati and Dr. John. enhanced four-valve heads with optimized port shapes and "cam-in-head" valve gear. Crane cams and aerodynamic bodywork by DeTomaso Automobi les of Modena. Italy. The team claims power output of over 100 bhp at 6900 rpm and they expect to see higher top speeds at Daytona (their previous best was 168 mph at the October AMA/CCS Race of Champions) . The first round of the '89 AHRMA Vintage MX Series will take place Sunday, March 5, at Ga torback Cycle Park in Ga inesville, Florida. T he Vintage MX will be held between motos of the AMA National Championship I 25/250cc MX Series round that will be run the same day . Classes will be combined and scored separately . The flamboyant Italian. who campaigned a Ducati 851 S in the World Championship Superbike Series last year. will manage the Ducati team in this year's series. Riding under the watchful eye of "Lucky" will be Cagiva GP team member Raymond Roche and newcomer Bal- ' dassarre Monti. who won the Italian "Twins" t it le last year. The February 5 Coyote Hills Hare Scrambles in northern Cal ifornia was canceled due to rainfall during the week prior to the date the event was to have run . The Santa Clara County Park and Recreation Department manages the land and they would not allow the Los A ltos Dirt Bikers (LADB) to hold the race. The LADB will run a hare scrambles on February 26 and hope to obtain an April rain date for the canceled event. (Continued to page 14)
