c T hat the Big Freeze took me to Another Place all peopled by Man 's Best Friend. Well, I w as out ridin ' hard and long, doin ' my own Lonesome Dove, caught up with the road and life far from home. And when th e sag e and dust blew and headwind went to ice, there came along a lone motel that 'looked as good as H eaven itself. With just one room left, out back. I paid my fa re and parked my motor, then went in to wash off th e gr ime. And there felt a pair of eyes meet mine. Some K9. Wrink led as I ever saw a dog, like ru m p led vel ve t. Its face fol ded on fol ds; and I bet th at was a smile so mew here in th ere. The pup seemed so h uman I wanted to chat. But I w as shot from th e rid e an d fell fast on th e nod, while th e dog gazed on. T hen ste p pe d rig h t in to m y dreams. Now it was R an d y's Ch in ese Shar-Pei, Ma mola's pe t " Su k i" come to visit my sleep , an d bring a world of [our-leggers in to my head. A cosm ic dog show, with hazy grass rings and fresh blue ribbons, and all th ose people with th eir g lo w and cam eras. And their dogs. And, you kn ow , th ey loo ked at them like we would motorcycles, too. No H arleys o r Big Fou r or Cag ivas here. J us t Borzo is and Afghans, Spaniels and Doberma ns. And G reat Dan es big as lIO s! W ha t I was seeing was the O kin d of love an d pr ide we have for our own pet two-w heelers. And I th ough t about how it was all so similar, having dogs and hav ing motorcycles. Ho w close th e -uih ole process was to stan ding around a bunch of bik es an d ben ch raci ng, com paring engine to engine , breed to breed, prize to pr ize. Putting up w ith th e same stale donuts and styrofoam coffee. " H ello! How are you? H ow's yo u r dogll" Or - " H i! How are yo u? How 's your bike?" Sound fami liar? Mamo la, in my dream, grin ne d and led his pooch away. A n d I aw oke hearin g th ee 01' night win d howl. O r was it another on e of them mutts ou t yonder? Or an oth er tu n ed mo tor go in g up through th e gears? Yeehaaaal It was time to shake a leg and h igh-tail it again! .
