Team Green 's Larry Roeseler captured the overall victory at the Cowpuncher National Hare Scrambles despite t angling w ith a tree. Terry Cunningham made his first appearance on the National circu it on his new Kawasaki mount. Cunningham finished third overall. Suzuki-mounted Ron Naylor challenged Roeseler throughout the race. The 1988 250cc National Hare & Hound Champion edged Suzuki-mounted Ro n Naylor to capture the Cowpuncher overall victory with third place going to another Team Green pilot, former multi-time National Enduro Champion T erry Cunningham. Hendon was heading back to the start line after completing a practice run up the start straight when he collided head-on with another rider, who was also practicing his start. Trying to avoid hitting eachother, the t;-"o rid ers swe~ed mto each other s path and collided. As a result, Hendon was left with a fractured leg and a fractured hand, with the other rider reportedly suffering a broken shoulder. When the green flag eventually dropped under cloudy skies, former Natio~al Ha.re.Scra~bl~s Champion Ed LOJak, ndlOg. his Iirst Nauonal for Yamaha, claimed the holes~ot but faded back d~e to m~chamcal problems. Honda rider Kev~n B~o.wn th.en took over the lead while dicing with Team Green's Aaron H o ug h, riding a KX250. However, a lap later, Hough crashed after tangling handlebars and retired from the race. In the early stages Cunningham, Plessinger and District 36 Number One plate holder Duke Dowell were dicing behind leader Brown, while Roeseler.i Naylor, Joe Zierman and Summers were trying to make up for poor starts.
