racer. "The whoops aren't round rollers any more, they're really carved out now so you hit them hard. The rough stuff can get a bit tiring after a while." As the teamed riders switched again at Midway and started the top half of the figure eight course, LaPorte and Roeseler were still leading the way. "Things started to slow down a bit towards the end of the first loop and Larry and 1 could stay out in front a bit easier," said LaPorte. " I think a lot of doing well in a race like this is teamwork and the two of us have a really good team." As the racers dashed into home check at the end of the first hour of racing, LaPorte was three minutes ahead of the nearest competition and had a time-adjusted lead of more than a minute over second-placed Jeff Darland, who was charging hard on the CR500 he shared with Bobby Russell. Means was one minute back in the time-adjusted standings for third and Hunnicut dashed past the 95-mile mark in fourth overall, neckin -neck with Pfeiffer for the timeadjusted 250cc lead, and just five minutes slower than his 500cc Kawasaki teammates. KX250 pilots Mark Vanscourt and Joey Lane were two minutes behind the Class 21 leaders in sixth overall and Randy Mora les and Jimmy Coffey (YZ495) thundered through the pits in seventh. Barely 30 seconds separated the top Class 30 (Motorcycle riders over 30 years old) contenders as they swept through the pits in 10th overall. Mike Sixbery and Jim Eveland (YZ250) were hard on the gas trying to escape tenacious KX500 pilots Kenny Parry and Scott Forward, and Scott Anderson and Michael Burke (XR600 ) were less than four minutes back in third. The John Braasch/Brett Duncan YZl25 was the first Class 20 (Mo torcycles under l25cc) entry to ·hit th e pits (15th overall ), but Tim Clark and Tim Morton tied up the timeadjusted lead wh en their KXl25 raced down pit row less than half a minute later. Clark and Morton 's bid for the l25cc honors petered ou t . just a few miles 'int o loo p two and the KXl25 riders were pushing their machine back into the pits less than half an hour later. Richard Jackson and John Etchart had opened up a seven minute lead over their nearest Class 40 (over 40 years old ) rivals at the end of the first loop and Himey Means and Bob Thompson (CR250) were way out in front of the Class 50 (Motorcycle Riders Over 50 Years Old) field. For Robert Stroud of P ar ker , Arizona, just completing loop one was a triumph in itself. " I won my class here in 1986 - that's the last . time 1 raced it ," said Stroud, who was making good time with partner Dustin Hoffman, despite riding with only one arm. " A dune buggy hit me head-on and paralyzed my right arm and this is my first year back racing. The race is going pretty good so far. I went down a couple of times pretty hard because the course is beat up from everyone prerunning, but I got back up and at it again. " The Stroud/Hoffman team's tenacity lasted six and a half hours and earned the Yamaha pilots 40th overall and eig hth in the 250cc class. The h ea dl o n g rus h continued throughout the second .loop of the 95-mile co urse. Roeseler and La Porte held the physical and time-adjusted lead all the way but positions were changing rapidly further back in the pack.
