IS Na tional Ama te u r Cham p ion Dan Kirk claimed th e overall win in th e Four-Stro ke Open cla ss of the scra mbles held a t th e Woodlan d Mot ocr oss Par k. In mot o one everyone was a bi t too anx io us and had to be lined u p twice before a good sta n finall y happened. Taking the lead was Kirk foll ow ed by Kevin Bass. Aaro n Wag· go ner. Floyd Beisel . Dick Stidham a nd Mike Todd. Bass and Wagg on er battled too th and nail with .Wa ggoner fina lly geu ing th e nod . Beisel cam e up o n Bass and they began a fierce baule rig ht to the checkered flag. At th e end it was Kirk . Wagg on er. Bass and th e ot hers . fn th e final m ot o Kirk led Waggon er. Bass. Beisel. Stid ha m and T odd. O n lap th ree Bass fought his wa y by Wa ggoner a nd Kirk contin ued to increase his lead. At th e chec kered flag th e order rema ined th e same. In the hotly-con tested 250cc class Dean Autrey go t the ear ly lead ahead of Craig Bowman . Scou G ri mm. Denny Fennell . Darrell Gray. Ken Ru sh to n and Ga ry Bren . Gri m m a nd Fennell litera lly blew by th e initial leaders and wen t o ut to a mote- long ba ttle. Lap after lap Fen nell held th e upper hand and a t th e end the o rde r was unchanged. In mo to two Au trey and Grim m go t a litt le too j umpy a nd wound u p o n th e back ro w. Fennell grabbed th e lead over Bowman and the others and im media tely began to build a huge lead . On lap two G ra y went into second and Gri mm moved right u p on Bowman. They ran su pe r dose for two laps and th en Grimm go t by Bowman and went afte r Gray. A la p la ter Gr imm pas sed Gray as the laps were ru n ning o u t. Meanwhile Fen nell was loo kin g good with a 40-yard lead . A lar ge tu rn out of riders and spectators showed up for th e Ne w Year's nigh t race. In th e 250cc heal race Speedy Kell go t the early lead fo llowed by Fishe r, Jeff An nen and Don Paul. Fisher was all o ver Kell and by lap two he loo k o ver the lead by maki ng an inside pa ss. Kell y chased Fisher righ t down to th e checkered fla g while Pa ul and An nen co nti nued to tra de positions. At th e finish it was Fisher , Kel l, Annen and Pau l. In th e ma in event Fisher go t to turn one first with Kell , Annen and Paul in to w. Fisher rode smooth a nd right o n the ins ide line, keeping Kell at bay th e entire race. wh ile Pa ul and Annen co nti n ued th ei r du el. At th e checkered flag it was Fishe r. Finally a t the ha lfway poi nt Fisher slid under Zirbel for the -lead as th ey contin ua lly laid i t intothe com ers while draggi ng th e cases. Mean wh ile Kell got th ro ugh the hu ge mess a nd tri ed 10 reel in Fish er an d Zirbel to no avail. Al the chec kered fla il it was Fisher, followed by Zirbel .
