Lawson was dominant in th e first two
Ama teur fin al s, taking th e early lead in both
10-lap runs a nd stretching it a ll the way to
th e fini sh. On Fr ida y . he was followed by
Wood and Suzuki-mo un ted Craig Woods.

second pl ace ride ahead of Kawasak i-mounted

The 500cc Am at eur cla ss winner Frank
Str oman, returned in th e 30+ class to do battle
with Stuart English. Stroman showed th e wa y
a t th e sta rt of moto o ne but was hounded lap
a fter lap by a tena cio us English. English
fina lly got by for th e win over Str oman. The
seco nd mota win and top $"old went to
Stro ma n, however, while En ghsh posted a 12 score for the runner-up sial.

17th running of th e Swamp Fox Enduro.
Those riders that did ~ m b le with Mother
Na ture were rewarded WIth sunny skies. warm
temperalu res and aweso me tra ction o n event
da y.
Am ong the starting ro ws included th e 1987
and 1988 Nati onal En du ro Ch ampions KTM 's
Kevin 1-!ines an d Suzuki 's Randy H awkins,
alo ng wit h a mu lti tude of talented riders suc h
as AIl en Gra vitt, Bryan Ada ms , G eorge
Waller. J r. , Joe y Hopkins. Daryll Kuenzer,
M~rk. Eaddy .and others . After 37 mi les of tight
twrsung trails through th e Francis Marion
National Forest, rid ers reached th e gas stop
for fuel and refreshments. Severa l rid ers were
not so fortuna te: o ne being Hawkins. It seems
H~wki ns ran o ut of gas approximately a ha lf
mi le befo re th e last checkpo int before the gas
stop; and inst ead of q uilling, wit h bad knees
and deep sand, he set a new co ur se recor d for
p ush ing his Suzuki tha t distance in four
mi nutes.
The second half of th e enduro was more
open terra in with a lill ie mud th rown in .
Severa l riders were so anxious to get back on
~~e tJ?lils that resets were m issed and disqualifications resulted. Scorin g the race went very
smooth ly with no protests. The final tally
showed four -AA riders with a score of five
points 10sL Hines was declared the overall
winner by 46 seco nds over Adams, who is
supported by Suzuki of Dalton, Dunlo p ,
