Manley led all but five of 24 lap s en rou te to a clean sweep ahead of Bro wn. In th e first mo to Brown pulled an enormous holeshot to lead Derek Bro wn , Manl ey, Ron Turner and Corey Schweitzer onto the first lap. As the pack exited the first tum Mike Healey, J eff Hi cks and G reg Zitterkop f were all lying on the ground. " I slid out, " said H ealey, " and that's it . I g uess Hi cks and Zinerkop f hi t me, bu t I don't kno w." As H ea ley a n d Zit ter kopf remounted and tried to ma ke up for lost time, H icks remai ned lying in the first turn. Apparently H icks had somehow go tten hi s hand caught in H ealey's rear sprocket and was a bit sha ken up. H owever, Hi cks was lat er said to be alrig ht . Back up front Manley q uickly sho t by Derek Bro wn a nd began sta lking Scan Bro wn . Manley chased Brown for a lap before he found the drive to motor past th e P ro Circuit / Ha llman / P J I /Shoei / R en t ha 1/ I n n o va ti o n Sports-sponsored Brown. Once into the lead Manley slowly opened up a comfortable cushion as Brown worked to separate himself from Derek Brown. Back in th e pack H eal ey began making a n incredible charge. On th e eig h th lap Heal ey had pulled in right beh ind Scott Brown and rapidl y cut the time down separating th e two . A lap la ter Brown made a costly mistake as he went off th e track and hit a telephone pol e head on . Bro wn somehow managed to stay up, but lost second to Heal ey. Shortl y after ta king comma nd of second Healey pulled to the side of the track and sto pped. " It seized, " said Hea ley. " It's just not my day." Man ley cruised to the checkers ahead of Scon Brown, Derek Bro wn and T urn er. Zitterkop f was fifth. Turner came back in the final to show Manley, Derek Bro wn, Zitterkopf and Scott Brown the wa y around at the start. T urner's stay in first was short- lived as Manley powered past the .H onda rider and co ntin ued where he left off in mot a o ne. Back in the pack Bro wn slow ly found his wa y into seco nd af ter swapping positions with Zitterkopf for a short tim e. The Kawasak i p ilot was riding a smooth race and on ly needed to fin ish amo ng the top 10 for th e overa ll. As th e race near ed the end the riders sta rted to spread themselves out . Manley went on to collect his secon d win of the day with Scott Brown finish in g a few seconds behind. Zitterkopf was third over H eal ey wi th Turner falling back to fifth. . " I sprai ned my an kle last weekend," said Brown , "but I felt pretty good out there. I was riding the second mota and decided - well heck, I' ll pass these guys. I went for it and and than I jammed my ankle aga in when I got behind Manley. Fro m there I j ust rode around." Manley may have won th e day's battl e but Bro wn wo n the mo nth . lo ng war. Bro wn collected the series ti tle with 295 points to top Zitterkopf's 272 points and Man ley's 238. Immediately after the 500cc Pro class race Turner jammed to the starti ng gate to compete in th e Vet P ro class wh ere he aced bot h motos' for the overall win. In th e first moto Mike Preston , Gary Semi cs, T im Lunde and Eri c McKenna chased T u rner acro ss th e fini sh line, bu t in ro und two it was a different story . T urn er led Lunde, Pr eston, Semi cs and Mar k White from start to fin ish before earn ing th e gold. Preston 's co nsistent 2-3 finish earned h im the runner-u p po sition a hea d of L unde's 4-2 and Sem ics 3-4. McKenna was fifth with 5-6. Carl a Nelson and Lisa Peterson each led for a sh ort time unt il Gonzal ez managed to slice her way through th e pa ck in each mota .
