A _nationa l motocro ss magazi ne recen tly publish ed an article on outside spo nsors hip. In th is ar ticle was a short pi ece concern ing San Migu el Beer and its spo nso rsh ip of two West Coast amateur riders. Durin~ th e interview with the publication's feat ure editor, it was emp hasized that al though the riders were mi no rs, San Miguel was spo nsoring the race team and not specifically spo nsoring minor riders. It was also stated during the interview that San Miguel was supp lying a q ua n tit y of beer to be brought to the races for promotional purposes. However, wh en the art icle went to print, it said that they were providin g spo nsorsh ip money for en tries (true) and two cases of beer for each race en tered for two 13-year-old Mini Novice class riders (no t true). T hese rid ers aren' t 13 or min i ride rs and they don' t receive any beer. T h is classi c exa mp le of " yellow journal ism" has probably cost us a g rea t sponsor du e to erro~ eo u s state men ts and considerably more mo ney than listed iri the article. Sponsors are hard enough to come by in the amateur ranks. So if socalled reporters are go ing to write, please print the correct story. . 4190 First Ave., T ucker . GA• .5 0081: mailing addrn\ P.O.
