Profile #44 "SUPER/MOTO CROSS is innovative." r~ally -Brian Lunniss ' Name: Brian Lunniss Occupation: Tuner, Team Honda Riding history: "I started riding moto rcycles arou nd the yard when I was about 10; my first bike was a Honda Trail 90. At 161 took up street riding and also started riding enduros. Motocross Was just popping onto the scene, and I did both MX and enduros because there wasn't much of either at that time. We traveled around the Midwest and I did real well in the enduros and not so great in MX. I also raced snowmobiles for a while, winning the amateur World Championship at one point." Professional background: "I got out of the military in 1970 and went to work as a mechanic in Suzuki's racing department. At that time, roadracing, MX and snowmobiling were all together. Nobody was assigned to a: particular rider, an d everybody did everything. Some of the guys we worked for were John D eSoto, Art Baumann, Bryar Holcomb, Mike Runyard and Billy Grossi. I then spent a year working for Scott USA as their racing representative, setting up the program and working on the development of the infamous plastic boot. I decided that was too slow a pace for me and went back to work. Honda asked me to go to Europe to work for G raham Noyce in the G rands Prix. I returned stateside and worked with Warren Reid, then Donnie Hansen. After Donnie got hurt, I worked for Bob Hannah three years, then went to work with Ricky Johnson when he joined Honda!' Track Record: Supercross and 250cc National Championships in 1982 with Donnie Hansen; Supercross and 250cc National Champi- z w .. -' iii I- a: it . w In o a: ~ . .Then, when you're done driving the truck, you have to get out, overhaul the motorcycle, the truck and everything else that needs to be done and get ready for the race. Thenyou do the race and Monday morning you get up and start driving again . The main thing is to be . really open and alert so that you learn somet hing new from somebody every day, no matter who they are. You have to be ready for new ideas or even to go back to old ones that seemed wrong at one time or another." . onships in 1986 with Rick Johnson; 250cc and 500cc National Championships in 1987 with Rick Johnson Bikes currently owned: Honda 500 Interceptor Advice for aspiring mechanics: "You have to be extremely dedicated. It's got to -be something' you want to do so badly that you'd do it even if they didn't pay you. It looks glorious from the other side of the pit fence, but I was only home 90 days last year and drove an average of 1300 miles a week. Magazine: "SUPER/MOTO CROSS is really innovative and it's professional in every respect. The editors are more interested in sticking to the facts and covering the sport than in being the National Enquirer." This endorsement is purely vo luntary . No fee or other consideration is paid.
