A rid ing 'buddy of ou rs had, well, packed up and moved on. H e gave his good reasons, bid h is fondest farewells, th en took his m ot orcycles and left . H eaded no rth in a cloud of dust . L eav ing us in an aim less, som ber sort of m ood, wo ndering itl fact how we'd ever survive. Th e roads w ithout him felt strange; th ey' d somehow shrun k and given up their thrill . Then we started talk ing th rough letters, he ,and I, v iv id pag es tapped ou t on com p uter keys and ma iled, sharing ou r pastime in distant ex change. R estorin g a bit of that loss w hen a sq uadron of riders loses one of its ow n to relocation . Bu t no t eno ugh. Th ere was still th at em p ty p lace in our riding rank s, that vacancy th at few can fill. T hen on e nig ht lik e a dream he sol o rode four hundred miles south ju st so we could all ride togeth er th e next dawn , th e same 400 going nort h again . Ah, th e brotherhood! Yes, th e sheer eu p horia of espirt de corps! R iding on ce more with that ex traordinary rider, the on e who in every group know s t he innerm ost secrets of motorcycling, th e one who fix es the most p uzzling of road breakdow ns and who tells the best jo kes. T he one w ho has ridden every road betw ixt here and th e next tank- up. N o matter w here. We all know th em, th ese master riders. Th eir nam es are as personal and close and yet as varied as the winds. You 've go t yours; I've go t m in e. Vinn ie on the S hadow . Jack on hi s Beem er. Marco riding the Gu zzi. J. And even w hen th ey aren't th ere, up front and leadin g th e way , we can feel th em amongst us. It 's an att itude, a being, a p resence that guides ou r ow n rid in g.
