As th e rid ers exited it was Broc " Golde n Boy " Gl over grab bing the hol esh o t foll ow ed by j ohnson, Mich ael Cra ig , Larry Brook s a nd Randy Moody. Ryan H u ghes, Kawasaki 's n ewest Team Green rider, was ta ken o u t in a first turn pi leup a nd Mike Pascarella launch ed h is Suzu ki RM 250 over the berm and in to a fence , whi le tryi ng to avo id a mishap. As H ugh es was ab le to rem ount quickly, Pasca re lla was not as fortunat e, as h is b ik e la y teeterin g over th e chai n -lin k fence whi ch in turn pu t him in to last pl ace. Meanwhile up front, j ohnson wa s putting th e pressu re o n G lo ver who was slow ly losing gro u n d to th e Honda pilot. By lap three j ohnson was ready to do ba tt le with Glover as th e duo approached th e infamo us Carlsbad Freeway. G lov er took th e off- camb e red s w i tc h b ack ins id e w hi ch a llowed j oh nso n to be o n the i nside of th e fo llowing left sweeper. That wa s all she wrote for Glov er as johnson flew down th e Freewa y a nd in stantl y began pulling away. From th ere on. j o h n so n proceeded to arouse th e specta to rs with hi s hig h -flyi ng ac t a n d ~n e - h a nd e d clickers. J ohnson immediatel y began pi ck ing o ff riders one by one as he thru st hi s way to wa rd Gl over. By lap two , j ohnson had mad e h is way into second an d sta rte d to cha lle nge Gl over for first. The two ca me upon the off-cambered switch back where johnson had made th e move in moto o ne. This time Glover cha rged to the outside but ca m e in too hard and went down, allowing joh nson to take over fi rst wi th Pasca rell a a nd Craig figh ting for second a n d G lover retaini ng fourth. Gl over managed to reel ·in Craig, creating a-ba r-ba nging ba ttl e which la sted a few la p s wit h Gl over emerging into th ird . Gl o ver was soon in strik ing distance of Pasca rell a , with Craig a few bike len gth s beh ind.
