Randy Hawkins, who clinched the 1988 National Championship a week before the Bitter End , rode the new Suzuki RMX250 to sixth overa ll , swirled about by 25 mile-per-hour winds and temperatures hovering just above the freezing level. " It wasn't too bad in the woods," said Russell. " 1 even worked up a little sweat, and being a little wet made it a little chilly on the roads. This run and the one last week in Louisiana have been the best of the year. Maybe we should have a first time club put on all the runs. " Cunningham matched Russell 's score point-far-point and zero-forzero except at the fifth check where TC was a few seconds on the wrong side of the fli p-card and dropped four points to Russell 's three. " I had a good time today ," said Cunningham. "The club"did a good job layi ng out the ru n. I liked the tigh t woods and the technical stu ff, an d the club mixed in enough open stuff _to let you relax a bit. There were a number of sharp little uphills that you had to make hard turns at the top or crash into something. That's wha t I consider technical. " Matt Stavish, 1988 ISDE silver medalist, finished third overall with a score of 26 and was also High Point A rider. Stavish said, " I haven't been challenged like this all year. I could have improved my score but I fell in the river (Rock Creek) during that last section. I dug the bike out of the mud and got started again, but I was a little upset with myself." Team Green 's J eff Fredette with a WL&J Enterprise-prepped KDX200, and Joe Zierman, on a Malcolm Smith/PSI /Larson Cycle-backed CR250 matched Stavish's 26 score , with Fredette getting the nod at the ti e-breaker and fourth overall. Fredette and Zierman were not strangers since they both rode on the sam e team, the Mt. Baker Motorcycle Club, at this year' s ISD E where each won go ld medals. Zierm a n , besides winning the 250cc A class and fifth overall, also registered the fastest time through the last 12 mile section, dropping seven points, a point better than the quickest AA. Da ve Pucharich, second-place trophy winner in the 250cc A class and rid ing a North Shore Honda CR250, lost the trail in the fifth section and dropped five points and raised his score to 27. P uchar ich still managed a seventh overall finish. "It was a good course and well marked," said Pucharich. " I missed an arrow, and when I ·got back on the trail, I had lost some time. I didn't know how much, but I can see now it was too much. " Kelly Getz, riding a CR250, was third in the 250cc A class and right behind Pucharich in the overall standings. Getz tangled some barbed wire in his rear hub on the first section and lost 10 points. Double A rider Allen Rand t, on a Lakeside Cycle KTM 350, also scored 28 bu t lost the tie-breaker. Ra n d y Haw ki ns, th e 1988 Nationa l End uro Champion, finished sixth overall wit h a score of 27 that included two hot markers at the ninth check. It was a tough day for Kurt Hough, who is backed by Team Green/ Malco lm Smith/Scott Goggles/ Dunlop/Ghost Riders. Hough rode on minute 13 and ballooned to 31 points. Hough matched th e low scores in the front part of th e run but when the lower numbers either dropped out or couldn't maintain th e pace after the third ga s stop, Hough found himself in th e position of breaking trail. Joe Hopkins picked up th e Open A class trophy with a score of 32, and he was followed by two Husky riders - Steve Narel and Jay Hall. -- Dick Burleson, riding a KTM I25EX in the Senior A class , was down 43 points at the last check, but that was 16 marks better than Husqvarna-mounted Chuck Craig. Carl Sharphorn, on a KTM , was third. Pete Wicks , on a 200cc Kawasaki, dropped 65 points for his winning effort in the 200cc A class. But a tip of the duck bill has to go to Dan Buck for his second p lace effort after reaching in and pulling out riding number two. Jan J ensen was third. Vince Henneberry with a score of 80 was High Point B rider. The next closest B rider in scoring was Steve Vollman (Husqvarna) in the 250cc class with a score of 109. Mark Atherton won the Open B class by getting through the ninth check. Honda-mounted Gary Hazel scored the Four-Stroke A class victory, while second in class went to Dave Kiesow. Riding an air-cooled Kawasaki KDX200, AA rider Jeff Fredette (73) took fourth overall, squeaking ahead of A rider Joe Zierman. Gale Eestefan, riding a KTM, picked up the Women 's class trophy.
