c That I was rid ing one day and just kept on going, and in my heart have never come back. L ik e no w, it was in the season's change that I rode out to San ta Fe. Tak ing th e hottest desert at n ight, dod gin g th e thunderstorms of after Noon . R id ing under th e heat and rain and hail, and th e lightn ing bolts. Sta ying th en close to a big metal truck - m y g iant shield. L et th e fire of Zeus strike It, not m e! And t hen I rode a f in e stron g horse thr ough sage and juniper, into th e fo othills of th e Sangre de Cristo. I made him gallop and sang a wild Ya hoo! N o throttle; (71Y mount sensed m y will, taking its message from the way I leaned. A nd I thought of what this lan d was and of w hat it had been . H ow i/ had gone for L ew is and Clark - farther no rth th eir Corps of Discovery was! - and I cou ld relate their own explorers' past to what's now, their wilderness to my pavement, endless an d in viting. Long after -sunset, halfway to sun up, I rode my motor in to th e huge New Mexico night. And ' in those quiet cany ons behind Santa Fe, I . stayed and wrote and bought a little lap typ ewr iter, an Ol ympiette.'A nd, when finall y I left , strap ped it and a towel to m y motorcycle's tank -:and stoppe d an hour down th e road, in Albuquerque, to sen d it on by mail. I stretch ed th e distance and rode south to So corro, up across Th e D iv ide and high Pla in s of San Agustin , alongside a fellow rider and his good m issus, and th eir beloved do g, Du ch ess. I ran Sa lt R iv er Can yon down ow of th e Wh ites, and saw th e Apache's eagle and his lon e wild stallion th ere against dawnpainted rock s. Th en crossed th e desert in a day-long rain that put m e in touch with th e earth again. T hat was all six years past , th at living and unforgettable dream of m in e; a lot of motorcycling miles ago. Bu t th ere are thos e few rides in a lifet ime that never 'go away, remaining v ivid and true and alwa ys to ride again, an d ride again . And no w , awake, I look to w here th e sun has jus t risen, and th ere's TH AT URGE once more. T o go. T o ride for th e open land. It was a journey tha t went straig ht for my heart, and wo uld not leave no matter what I did. Or do. William Edg ar .... V ..0 o ..... u o Copyright Page 3 Productions.
