G ary H icks was out in seco nd with Tull McBride third. Steve Lucero, a lormer IMS winner , missed the start badly and was m ired in last. McBride went to th e outside dirt and shocked everyone wh en he blas ted by Hi cks lor th e seco nd spot as th ey exiled th e seco nd tum. Hi cks stayed clo se until McBride got th e drive orror turn four o n the o pe ner and p ut some di sta nce bel ween himsell and th ird place. . Even though McBride had made las t work 01 H icks . Schwam had alrea dy esta blished a hu ge lead and by th e ti me the lour-la p event had co me 10 an end, he had a ha ll stra igh t to spa re. CA, AUG . 28 The short trackers were surprised to lea rn tha t they were to race o n the brand new 3/16 mi le short track a, Baylands Ra ceway Park instead 01 th e customary bi-weekl y 1/7 m ile facility but when th e mo tors quieted and the checkers Iast new i t was 500cc Pro Jon Nunez and his Harl ey-Davidson that look top hon ors. The competition was not light as Dan McDo n nell , a lso H -D mo unted , David Sanchez on a Honda a nd Rand y Bererna n on a Ro ta x a ll wo rked 'a best Nu nez. The heat race was a clear indication that Nunez was serious abo ut winning th e first ever motorcycle race on the new oval. H e won both his races fro m seco nd place starts. He did not assume th e lead until th e h ea t a nd fina l were a' lea st tw o laps o ld. Fro m that point o n he was uncontested. Finishing seco nd bo th times OUI was McDonnell . Bro th er acts got into th e program as Dan and Don Han dominated th e 80cc Min i Expert class and Dav id a nd Sam Freeze grabbed a ll th e hon ors in th e Vetera n class . The Hart brothers were chased har d a ll th e way by 60cc Expert Jeff Gabhart, The Freeze boys p ut o n q uit e a show lor the fan s. These two com prised the class and . as soo n as o ne of th em ass umed a lead he wo uld loo k lo r the o ther a nd mo tion lor a pas s. At ti mes it was com ica l, but th e sp urn of speed 10 gel into th e lead were rea l and it was a wo nder that nei ther o ne fell . It wasn 't a photo finish in th e fina l as David won. At th e start, it was Elmira Alvernaz o n a Yamaha wh o led into th e first co rner. While th e six-rider pa ck was sorti ng o ut. Alvernaz kept th e point. GOing into th e first comer 01 lap three, McBee put his Yamaha o n a n inside line a nd too k th e lead away lrom Alv erna z. On th e backstret ch , Auz enne powered by Alvemaz and th e ba ttle lor the wi n was set bet ween the same riders wh o diced back and for th in th e heat ra ce.
