Mark White won the Veteran Expert class at Perris Raceway. never mor e th an 20 feet back from second place at any tim e. He in herited second with McBee's sp ill and he kept it to th e che ckers. Veteran Experts Dave Bostrom and Gr eg Sowle put o n a two- rider performan ce th at was pure fun. Bostrom on th e R O laX was clear ly su pe rio r o n thi s particular n ight. The leader never kept it for long and it appeared th at 'who ever It was. an opening would be provided and the trailing rider would rega in the lead. The £irst moto winner in th e 250cc class was Chris Raccelli o n his Honda, but hot o n his heels the entire way was eventual overall winner Wade Porter o n another Honda. . The second molO in th e class was the difference as Porter grabbed the lead earl y and nothing that Raccelli tried worked. The order aLthe checkers was Porter, Raccelli and Beau Melvin, who had led on the opening lap. The 2-1 of Porter bested the 1-2 performance of RacceJli.. Hard luck rider of the even ing Beau Melvin was able 10 earn a th ird place trophy after all with hi s 4·~ record Rapid ly improving George Go ll ing took th e hon or s in the Veteran Junior class with two mota win s on h is Honda. (Hon). or Minka claims Labor Day MX at Perris Rcwy By David Procida PERRIS, CA, SEPT. 5 Mike Min ka claimed the 250cc Pro clas s d uri ng La bor Day co mpeti tion at Perris Raceway, fin ishing wit h a )·2 score. In th e first moto, Todd Campbell bolted o ut of the ga te to ta ke the holeshot. As th e pack charged the 180" first turn, J on Ortner, Mike Min ka a nd Mike Pascarella dic ed for second with th e pack o n ly a heartbeat behind th e trio. Min ka dosed o n Campbell, d iving under the KTM rider for th e lead as O rtner let Pascarell a dr op him bac k 10 fo ur th . Craig Davis was in high gea r and dosing q u ickly on O rtner. Pascarell a carved his way past Campbell and began to bear do wn on Min ka. As th e pa ir carn e o ut of th e swa mp , Pascarella attem pted 'a pass usi ng a n o utside lin e, o nly to ba ve Min ka stull him har d with th e Su zuki rid er pa rting company with his bike. With the-pack exiting the swamp, a ma d das h was seen as riders tried 10 avoid th e fallen rider and bike. Davis ha moved up through the havoc and was now ru n ni ns in second wit h Sha wn \Vynn e occu pyi ng th ud- Mink a was cruising ou t front as he turn ed to see Davis closi ng an d picked u p th e pace, hol d ing 011 the Yamah a p ilot to the fin ish. The Suzuki pilot dove under Mmka in the bowl corner. Mink a recovered quickl y, but Pascarella was lon g gone. Davis had his hands full with Mabery, wh o too k over third a t the start of lap four, R un n inlf iiI fifth was Ortner , but Musgrave was clo:nng fast. Both Mabery and Musgrave displaced Davi s late on th e moto, as PaSGlrella took th e checkered. When the results were tallied, Minka's )-2 ga ve h im th~ o verall with Da vis going 2-5 for second overa ll. Sweeten tops on the second lap, by 20-yards. Sponseller carne back and easily led the 250cc Amateur . race, with a heated batt le over seco nd between Rand y Buzzard, Eddi e Hidden, Paul Southard and Bill Geissel throughout th e race. While the second place positions were changing every section, Sponseller pulled out, but as he carne off the final turn, his carb fell off and he coasted to the win. After dominating th e 500cc Amateur class most of the year , Dallas Baer was outclassed by Shawn McNanry in th eir heat, But a gearing change made the differen ce as he took the lead coming off turn four and kept McNanry a few lengths back throughouL Results 50: 1.
