G raves linished second, ahead 01 Larry j ackson , Lance Sma il and Mike Harri s. Mo to two saw Ward take the lead with Graves ra mmi ng lrom beh ind. Harris lound him sell in th ird while Smail and jackson lollowed in the top live. Ward and Graves held down th e top two spots to the linish , while jackson netted th ird, good lor a 3-3 third overall behind two 01 the Northwest's fastest pros. In th e firs t 125cc Ex pert race, Mark Nason tim ed the backw ard s-falling gate perfectly a nd gra bbe d the lead, followed by L: m son . Lamson got by Nason jn the first lap and, pulled aw ay from th e rest 01 th e field wi th a very co nvi nci ng win. He was followed by Brian Eld er. The seco nd moto was again a Lamson sho w, as he won with a no the r co mforta ble lead. The 250cc Ex pert race ha s had so me 01 the closest raci ng a ll year at Fern ley and toda y was no exception . Dave McCombs holeshot th e first mot a and was on hi s \Yay to wh at loo ked like an easy win. But two laps fro m the finish , McCombs let hi s lront wheel get . too hi gh on a berm , ca using him to go o ver . th e to p and crash. The Yanks held a 59 to 49 poin t lead after co mpe titio n o n th e sho rt Baylands track, but their work was cut o ut for them o n the second da y with the long trac k raci ng. Phil Crump took a close win over In gels in heat o ne and An ton Pilouo led teammate Gary Allen to victory in th e second heat. In ro u nd two, th e USA , with a win by In gels , p icked up th ree points in th e first heat , But the World team, with a win by Co lli ns , ca me back to end round two tied o nce again . In rou nd three In gels battled th e three World team members by himself as Doug Nicol fell, a nd Steve Martin was o ll th e pace on th is go aro und. In th e second heat , Mike Parsons led th e USA team for a win, but no t enough po ints were made up a nd it was the World team wit h a two poin t edge. ' Ingels, Nicol and Martin picked up I I poi nts in th e nex t heat to ta ke a five-point lead as round four star ted. Then Crump led G lyn Taylo r and Co llins to put it to th e USA team , taking th e maximum 12 points and a lour-point lead overa ll . Round five saw Ingels battlin g by himself to keep th e USA in co nten tio n and wh en the second heat came o n, Rocky Robinson p icked up th e win with Robert Curry second and Parsons fourth. Kevin showed why he is th e Na tional l25cc Am ateu r class cha m p as he easily took th e class by a stra ight, and also too k the 250cc Am ateur final on the West Cycl e Shack Villa . Mik e defeated mu lti Nati on al Amat eu r cha mp Georgie Price in the 600cc Expert lin al , alte r Pri ce had beaten him -by a lew feet in the 250cc final earlier. Mike. Varnes had the lead as th e 250s ca me ollthe seco nd turn, clos ely pursued by Price, Kenn y Mo hler a nd Lew Woods. Pri ce got by as th ey came off th e second turn on th e loll owing lap and held it lor the rem ainder 0 1 th e race. Wh ile the positio ns remai ned the sa me for th e top lour, on ly a few feet separated each of th em . As th ey came o ll the linal turn, Varnes tri ed to ta ke Price o n the outside, but came up just a lew leet behind Pri ce. Varnes again was th e po in t man in th e 600cc Expert linal, th is time with Mike Klopp and Price right with h im . With Klopp riding th e high, outside line, the front spo ts changed off 01 every turn, until Klopp got a little too high in the second turn a nd la id it down ' aft er h ittin ~ a slick a rea th at stayed there mo st of th e night, Price was close, but fini shed a len gth down . Kevin Varnes q uic kly jumped in front of the 125cc class and pulled away to an easy strai g ht margin by the end, but the real battle was over second as Robert Miller, Gary Clark, , Ken Coolbeth j r. and jelf Isol a traded second " back and lorth. After battling into th e pack for seco nd al ter a bad start, Coolbeth started to tak e co ntrol of th e gr oup, grabbin g second as the y took the two- laps-left sign . Kevin 's 250 win was sim ilar to his 125 victory as he had the lead a t th e star t, with Ken Yod er, Chuck Wrecsics and Eddie Hidden closely bunched behind him.
