I need to buy one-dozen motorcycles that can be taken to Zaire-Angola to be used for diamonds and gold in Africa. They must be a ble to go over uncharted areas , through mud, hard terrain, rivers a nd in general take a lot of hard use. T hey must also be as Iowan investment as pos sible as Zaire is a poor co untry. Can you help me to locate som e good values? I am here (the U.S.) learn ing how to order supplies for the Zaire 'm ilitary and will be here for six months mo re. CAPT. JEAN PIERRE KAMBA Allied Forces Rm . 31, Bldg. 2505 Frankfo rt St. Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD Diamon ds and gold? Sounds like the Zaire m ilitary does- m ore than prov ide natio na l defense. We're sure some en terprising dealer itl Maryland will be con tacting you in the near future . . . Editor. Speedway questions I enjoy your newspaper, especia lly th e action phot os. The coverage of th e Peoria 'IT was especiall y good. I also enjoy th e co verage of th e speedway racing in California. It is well known th at the secret to oval racing is "to go fast and turn left," but I am curious about some of the differences between flat tracking and speedway racing. Why do the speedway bikes have discs in the rear wheel? Why do the speedway riders lean th e bi kes to the right and let the rear whee l sp in when th ey are wa iti ng to get to the sta rt ing line? Why do the speedway bi kes run only four lap s o n the o ne-eigh th m il e ovals a nd on ly three- laps on half mi le ovals like Ascot? T here seems to be a lo t of mec hanic activity around the lo wer.left side of the engines just befo re and just af ter a race. H ow come? What's a scratch main and a' handicap main? .Ho w do the speeds of the speedway bikes compare with the Rolling Thunder of the 750s on a half mile , track such as Ascot? The new 600 class? Where does Agajanian get those trophy girls? BOB KIMM Phoenix, AZ And th e enve lopes, please. For tw o reasons : th e discs serve as minibillboards on 'w hich to pa int th e name of a rider's sponsor; th ey also serve as a form of ai r brak e w hen. th e machine is pitch ed sideways int o a corner. It 's leaned over on th e [ootpeg to free th e rear w heel and let it spin free so th ey don't burn ou t the sensi tive clutc hes. To keep th e racing close. In a scratch ma in all the riders lin e up on the same line; in a handicap main th ey us e a staggered start with the riders no rmally 10 yards apart . Th e speedway bikes turned in laps in th e low 23second bracket on th e Ascot half m ile oval in th e recent U.S.A . vs. Th e World competition.. i 50cc dirt track m achinery, as well as on e rider on a 600, turned laps in th e low 22second range at last September's Ascot H alf Mile (Ricky Graham holds th e Ascot record at 21.419 seconds, set on a Harley-Davidson XR 750 in 1983); speedway bikes in th e U.S.A . us. The World meet ran one-speed gearbo xes; th ey do run long tracks in Europe w ith twospeed gearboxes wh ich would no doubt provide for quick er lap times at Ascot. In Pho enix ... Editor. Invasion of privacy I wonder if mo tocross will ever wake up to the rea l wor ld of professional spo rts. I'm referring to the pi cture of Donny Schmit with hi s leathers unzipped bein g interview ed by (Larry) Huffman. Real pro move . It 's no wo nder it pa ys $480 to wi n a 125cc MX Na tional. What major spo nsor wants it s spo ke s ma n s ta n d i ng around in h is underwear ? . It ' was plenty hot in Peoria too. but (Chris) Carr wasn 't sta nding on the victory sta nd with hi s pants unzipped. Bu t th en ma ybe tha t's o ne reason they have th e Camel Ch al len ge. That's 10-grand, bo ys. A long way from $480. . JIM DEANE Sandpoint, ID Larry Maiers, not Larry Huffman, was the public address announcer at Millville and he was interviewing Schmidt in the pit area, not on a vi ctory rostrum in front of the crowd. Turn on' your local newscast and on just about any given even ing you'll see at hletes being interviewed in locker rooms, m any times shirtless. On e of th e most poignant photo s I've ever seen was featured in a p hotograp hy exhibit, Man In Sport, th at appeared in ma jor m useu m s across the country in th e sixties, It showed an obviously tired and dejected War ren Sp ahn, a g reat baseball pitcher of that era who if memory serves me correctly had just lost a World Series game, sitting in front of his locker in nothing bu t :his underpants. His very young son is standing in front of him looking at his father with a p riceless expression of love. The photo is a work of art, and the fact that the pitcher is clothed only i n his underpants doesn 't detract from it at all. Finally, th e' majority of motocrossers wear some form of "s wim trunks" or similar undergarment under their rid in g pants so they can tak e off th eir pants and cool off in th eir pit area after racing . . .
