c That in looking for a New Ride, all I had to do was what I'd always don e. It was th e last h eat w ave of summer. Triple Digit had taken on a raw m eaning. llO! It was HOT, baby. H otter than hot! Pavement in places was soft as road race rubber. My leath ers and "helmet were sheer torture to wear. But for w hatever it was worth, I was away on a ride that just wouldn' t cool off. Down San ' Diego way. To see f rien ds and watch our America's Cup Stars & Stripes sail. And w hile I was th ere, I dreamt of a grand hotel where motorcycl ists were treated like visiti ng royalt y. Each room in this palace had a place for your bik e >« In side! And there was a private track, too! As groomed and as fast as Gardena's half m ile, right.down at the ocean w here th ere was always a breeze. And on th at balmy evening under the first stars th ere were part ies for a hundred differen t ridin g allegiances. H arleys here, BMWs th ere. The Big Four. And more."Veteran A -Jays and neat Trump et s , Vi n tage Beeze rs and Nortons and Du cks and Gu zzis and whatever. Th ere were restored Ch iefs and Electra G lides pretty en ough to bring tears. And at night, beneath colored lantems and with a shi ny brass band, th ere was a parade of th e best lookin ' bikes I'd ever seen. In m y dream! Fireworks burst high above gabled roofs and graceful pa lms. There were golden trophies and ex travagant prizes given out, an d the finest Champagne was poured far into the night. It was deluxe and ~ala. And when the dawn light came , It was all still there, in this resort world I dreamed. T here - until th e sun rose up once more ou t of th e mountains in all its full fury. Mak ing the day real again . And hotter than hell! Suddenly all was changed, the figmen t gone. For now, at least. I was on my wheels and blasting through th e heat , remembering my vision . And I thought - How great it is to do th is thing! To ride! And to im agine! Here I was, traveling a road that allowed this to happen. A road given magic by the motorcycles we ride.
