Ermolenllo wins at Inland Speedway By Scott Daloisio 34 SAN BERNARDINO , CA, AUG. 17 Favorite son " Flyin " Mike Faria made hi s Inland Motor Speedway debut, but a fellow British Leaguer, Sam Ermolenko, walked off with the glory after winning the Scratch main event. Ermolenko, along with h is Wolverhampton Wolve teammate Ronnie Co.rrey and Bobby Schwartz, put th e huge crowd on th eir feet wi th what may have been th e best Scratch ma in in southern California in 1988. Schwartz wheelied off th e line an d had to watch as 'Co rrey beat him to th e first bend. GM-riding Ermolen ko rode th e ex trem e outside an d pulled alongside Schwartz wh en th ey went down th e back chute the very first time. Staying against th e boards, Erm olenk o brou ght th e m a ssi ve ga thering to it's feet with a crowdp leasing swee p around turns three and four. While ridi ng against the boards . he got Schwartz in tum th ree and con ti nued th e drive o utside or Co rrey in tum four a nd took th e lead. Correy and Schwartz wouldn 't gi ve in. They both charged th e leader and Correy pulled al ongsid e as they rocketed off tum four th e second time. Ermolenko, on the Pi ck Your Part/PClc/California Mini Truck/ Shoei/Kal-Gard-backed GM , fought off the advances, but th ere were still more to come. Correy continued to challenge Ermolenko, and Schwartz was just inches behind, looking for an opening. As they closed out th e third circui t, Correy momentarily poked his front tire ahead but once again, Ermolenko's drive forced him back to second. Correy challenged one last time as they roared through the final bend and for a split seco n d, he parked. He got back on the throttle immediately, but the damage was done. When the ch eckered came down, it was Ermolenko by a half wheel width. Schwartz was third, on the lead duo's rear tires at th e fin ish, with Bart Bast fourth. Billy Hamill showed more £lashes of brilliance when he cop ped the Handicap main from the 30 yardline. Hamill, piloting the Speedway USAISTPlVance & Hines/Quaker State-sponsored Weslake, was fourth when the green £lag dropped, but he quickly worked h is wa y through th e pack. Hamill chopped down leader Steve Russell 's advantage a nd began to lean on him the fourth time arou n d the eighth-of-a -m ile oval. Russell finally made a n erro r as th ey came off tum four on lap seven . H e drifted high and left th e Inside open. Hamill pounced on the clear territory took the lead, an d led the final lap.' Segedy stomps 'em at Deerfield ST By Roy Kays ATWATER, OH, AUG. 20 Ian Segedy, on his Yamaha 500, took the early lead in th e Open class and never looked back as he beat J eff Ri ess and Open points leader T o m Albright for the feature win at Deerfield Speedwa y. The track was in extreme ly good sh ape and very fast. Seg edy was hooking up well an d doing wheelies for th e spe ctators o n th e las t co up le o r laps. In the 250cc class Sh awn Thomas took th e lead in th e main over heat winner Segedy. Segedy, who had a horrible start, began to r eel in Thomas on lap two when Thomas went down coming off tum two. Segedy couldn't avoid him and also went down hard. Repairs were quickly made to both machines but Thomas was too shaken up to restart. Segedy made it to the line but more misfortune struck as his machine stalled when the green came on. Kurt Cerinsky was quick to take adva n tage of Segedy's mistake and sho t into the lead. Chris Mendiola pursued Cerinsky the entire race but couldn't really pressure the leader. It ended with Cerinsky as the winner, then Mendiola and a disappointed Segedy in third. Results 250: 1. Spdwy By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA , AUG. 19 In round two of the Nissanl7UP Series at the Oran~e County Fairgrounds, Billy Hamill visited victory ci rcle. Hamill took the Handicap main while Alan " Crazy" Christian won h is fourth Scratch main of the year. Jessee Finch was the man to catch in the Handicap main, as he led off the start from the 20. Hamill, off th e 30, came off the line second, only to have Scotty Brown beat him into the first bend. Before the end of th e o pen in g go around, Hamill sent Brown back to third and began sniffin g for Finch. Louis Kossuth began to mount a challenge on lap two and at that time, it was anybody 's race. Hamill finally broke things open wh en h e forged th e Speedway USA /Quaker State/STP/Vance & Hines/Monrovia Diesel Weslake past Finch on lap three. Less th an one lap later, Brown took Finch for second. At the halfway point. Hamill had a comfortable cu shio n ahead of Brown and Mike Faria. The first two never changed and Hamill took the win with room to spare over Brown. Faria faded over the final two circuits and wa s passed by Christian, who eventually took third, and " Rad" Brad Oxley. The Scratch main wa s a vintage Alan Chri sti an r ace. Chr is tian showed every o ne that h e s ti ll knows his wa y around a ra ce track with a brilliant tapes-to-checkered run. Coming from th e pole, Christian fo ugh t off Bobby Schwartz in the first tum, h e held h is ground and bumped Schwartz out of his way. That aggressive move by the rider on the STP/Cody Racing/Bell/Cal Fab/ Jawa gave h im a lead that he never relinquished. The field began to string out on the second revolution and, on the third time around, Christian ran away with it. Schwartz took second, followed by Jim Sisemore and Steve Lucero. Results SCRATCH: 1.
