As the night wore on the m ain event la ps got less, b u t not the excitement as Bu tch Davidson held court in the upper tiers of the grandstand while Ken Roraboug h t topped the 250cc class. Jack Grenig re tu rned to his win ni ng ways in the O pen Novice class over Rod Quall es a n d then won the Vet Novice divisio n to boot. Dymond cuts up Carlsbad SX By Dewey McDewey CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 21 T eam Yamaha 's Micky Dymond came o ut to th e all- new supercros s track a t Carl sbad Raceway an d led both mo tos fro m start to finish to tak e th e overall victory in the Pro class. Mo to one saw Dym ond' ta ke the start with Chris Neal and J ohn Levey h ot on h is ta il. After a lap Dym ond was jumping a nd flyi ng over every bump like a crazy banshee, p u lling away to a comfortable half-lap lead , b ut Neal and Levey were banging bars for second. Neal went down on lap four and Levey took over second, ·bu t Neal wanted it back. Neal tried all the lines to get by L~vey, but Levey held on for a couple of laps before the two collided. Neither rider went down, but Neal ripped o£f Levey's front brake cable and Levey had to contin ue wi th no front brakes, but he he ld on for second. Moto two saw Dym on d , Neal, and Levey take the starL Levey went to the outside of the first tum trying to pass D ym o n d and Neal, b u t. cl ipped a hay bale an d we nt down h ard. In th e 250cc Beginner class Kirk Wasson ' took the fir st m o to hands down. But in moto two h e stalled off the line and started dea d la st. Dave Wood gave challenge at the start of th e first rnot o, but Vohland , was soon out in fro nt of Wood and setting a blazing p ace. Com in g from th e back o f th e pack, a pair of H on das p i lo ted by To ny McG r a th a nd Jim m y Rob er tson were m oving u p in quick order. McGrath made it up to seco nd with Robertson in tow but there was no ca tchin g Vohland as h e roosted to the win. McGrath held off Rob ertson for second wh ile H ondamounted Derek Currie was a di stant fourth behind Rober tson. Wood fell o £fth e p ace and h ad to settle for fifth. There was no gettin g close to Vohland in th e seco n d round as he topped the moto for th e overall in the Pro class. Robertson was looki ng good in m oto two . and flew h is H onda to seco nd for seco nd overa ll, while McGra th took third and third overall. Shawn Freiling had a good start this moto and h eld on for fourth, securing fourth overall with Wood fifth overall sco ri n g another fifth. . Steve Nelson came out on top o f the Intermediate class with a 2-1 score. In the first rnoto, Nelson was headed for the victory w hen h e mi stook the w h i te fla g fo r the ch eckered and headed for th e p its. H is p it crew pointed him back on th e tra ck but not before J ohn T homa s h ad inherited the lea d and went on to th e win with Nelson second. Th omas h o leshot th e seco n d ro u nd with Nelson in h ot p urs ui t, but Nelso n ca ugh t Thomas snooz in g co ming into a hairpin turn an d sh o t by for th e lead. Nelson stre tched h is lead for the win a nd th e overall, with Thomas secdtl d and second overall. J erry Wright, in his first race since breaking h is wr ist in a practice crash in June, pu t together two thirds for third overall.
