Krause, Hunnicutt tough at larry Hailey Memorial Scra mbles By Donnetta Murray 32 RED MOUNTAIN , CA, AUG. 27-28 Heat was a factor at the Larry Hailey Memorial Dual European Scrambles staged by Ridgecrest M.C. at Charlie 's P lace, but Pa ul Krause and T ed Hunnicutt to ughed it out to take wins Saturday and Su nday, respectively, in the Open Expert classes. Kawasaki-powered Krause nipped Husky's Dan Smith and Ted H unnicutt on a Kawasaki at th e en d of a short bomb run to take the lead in the sand wash. "I got going really hot on the second loop," noted Krause who is sponsored by Kawasak i/Smith l AnswerlShoei/Metzeler/Tsubakil Spectro/White Broth ers/ Ren th a ll OMFI Neal Enterprises. "Dan started fading and that gave me room LO breathe." It had rained Friday and the humidity was a big factor for most racers Saturday. As Smith dropped back, Cliff T homas aboard a Yamaha slipped into the second p lace position. Thomas crashed in the canyons du ri ng the final loop LO a llow a heat-affected Hunnicutt into second. . As the riders came over the hill and into the finish ch ute it was Kra use receiving th e checkered flag with Hun nicutt in second, a battered Thomas in third while Smith was able to hang on LO fourth place. Sunday's start saw Smith, Hunnicutt and Krause battling it out for first LO the end of the bomb run. Krause again had a great start which was aided by Smith and Hunnicutt bumping bars right off the line. But the duo was by his side in a second as the three raced handlebar-tohandlebar to the end of the bomb. Hunnicutt was able LO grab the lead while Smith passed Krause for the second slot. Hunnicutt was 15 seconds ahead of Smith at the end of the first loop but Smith had narrowed that LO 10 seconds the second time around. " Sm ith pushed me real hard," said Hunnicutt. "He never gave me a break for a minute." Krause dropped out at the end of the second loop leaving Hunnicutt to only contend with Smith. The Kawasaki Team Green/Dunlopl Tsubaki/ RenthaIlBel -RaY/Scott USA / Pro Circuitl AXO-sponsored Hunnicutt kept his pace and took the victory. Smith started fading a little by the fourth loop but was far enough ahead of Tom Willis on a Husqvarna to earn his second place. " I was h oping Ted would get tired, but he never did," said Smi th , " I ended up gett ing tired instead." It was a wi n ning weekend for Ken Parry on h is Yamaha. H e led wire: to-wire in Saturday's Vet Expert race and followed that with a third pl ac finish in the 250cc Expert class despi te a rear fla t tire. Parry , who is sponsored by Granada Yamahal Sco tt Performa nce Products/ PJII OillSmith Gogglesl AXO Sport, had a bad start in Sunday's Vet Expert race and had to settle for fourth after the first go-round on the fast, open course. He charged really hard and was rewarded for his efforts by passing all three ahead of him to take the lead which he kept to the finish line. There were two clear-cut winners for the 250cc Expert races. Neither rider was challenged with Suzuki's Charlie Morris winning the trophy on Saturday and Brett Howell aboard a Kawasaki first to the checkered flag on Sunday. It was a different story for Saturday 's 125cc Expert race with Dan Smith on a Cagiva and perennial 125cc winner Eric Halgath dueling it out in the first loop. Smith was running fourth at the bomb but was able to pass both Ha llgath and Brett Howell on a Ka wasa ki at the same time in the sand wash. H allga th returned Smith th e favo r and the two diced back and forth with Sm ith finally p u lling a hea d to ta ke the lead and eventual win wi th Hallgath trailing in second place at the finish. "T ha t was a fun race," said Smith. " If I could make a living racing 125s, that's what I would race ." Hallgath was back in his normal first place position a t the end of Sunday's race.
