(Y.m~ Schwartz Hicks top IMS Speedway By Scott Daloisio • v 28 SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 24 Bobby Schwartz and Gary Hicks were the main men at John LaDouceur 's Inland Motor Speedway Wed-, nesday night. Schwartz beat Hi cks to win the Scratch main event with Hicks coming right back to cap ture th e Handicap main: After winning his hea t and semi, Sch wa rtz was bringing the CTI Brace/Budweiser/ Astrodeck/STP/ Quicksilver GM fro m gate two in the main. Hicks, . from the pole, was beaten into the first bend by Schwartz. Mike Faria tried the dirt line early. For a moment it worked, but just as quickly he hooked up and went towards the wall. By the time he recovered, he was mired in last. Schwartz had established a commanding lead by the end of the first , circui t while Hicks' established h i m self i n seco n d . Faria came around Louis Kossuth to reclaim thi rd at the end of th e opening circui t. By the time the checkered flag wa ved Schwartz had built up a q ua rter-straigh t lead over Hi cks and easi ly too k the.win. Kossu th kept the hea t on Faria and p ut a tire ahea d of him to take thi rd . Josh Larsen beat Doug Bowers off the li ne at the sta rt of the H andicap ma in. Hicks was out third a nd, along . with Jim Fishback, he was on Bowers before the end of the opening circuit. Larsen was running away from th e co mpe tition arid had established a huge lead before Hicks-and Fishback disposed of Bowers. Hicks, on the Mod ular Casework Systems/STP/ Q uaker State.lMilen Bros. Weslake, quickly chopped down Larsen's lead and camped o n his rear tire. For the next four circuits Hicks tried the inside, but Larsen was hugging the inside pipe. Hicks would go wide to th e dirt and Larsen would hook it up o n the in sid e. Finally Larsen dr ifted wide and Hi cks flew through.th e open ing on the inside. By the tim e La rsen got it back down, he had been freight trained and dropped to fifth. At th e end it was Hicks wi th roo m to spa re over Jim Sisemore and Dubb Ferrell.. Results 1. Smith takes Perry MountainMX By T.e. Smith MAPLESVILLE, AL , AUG . 27 Perry Mountain MC hosted their first race of the season, a nd Enduro class action saw Joey Smith riding his Kawasaki KDX200 to an overall win. In rnoto one, Smith pulled the holeshot and cruised to the finish. But in moto two , Mike Smith had the lead bu t it was short-lived when Joey Smith passed in a curve on lap two. The largest class of the night was the l25cc class and in moto one, Jimmy Reeves led the pack from start to finish. H onda-rider Terry Roberts got off to a bad start when his bike sta lled in the first turn. He got on the gas to steadily move up in the pack to finish third beh ind SCOll Stephens. Moto two saw Lee Nichols pulling the lead off the line with Shane Pere and Jeff Parnell on his rear wheel. By lap three. Pene and his Yamaha flew by Nichols to take the checkered flag. In 250cc class com peti tion, La ndo n Carte r was o ut front an d led to the finish wi th Brian Robertson finishing a distant second. Mot o two was a different story. Rob ertson pulled the holeshot , but Carter soon passed Robertson on lap one . On lap two , Robertson go t by Carter. At this point it was a game of chase, un til Robertson fell in a turn giving Carter the advantage. After Carter started the next lap his machine locked up, giving Robertson the nod followed by Tom Halliburton: Carter then borrowed a friend's LAS VEGAS , NV, AUG. 13 Glenn Warren smoked the Over 25 class at Las Vegas International Raceway by winning bo th of his heats after race- long duels with Tony Berluti each time. , As race one blasted into action, Berluti had a slight edge over Warren and Rick Angelo held a strong third. Berluti and Warre n q uickly pulled away from everyo ne else and staged their own private battle for the race lead. Warren made a las t-lap pass to just edge out Berluti for the VICtOry. .Moto two was the same as the first race, with Warren chasing Berluti, a nd both of them bursting out to a big lead. And once again, after a race. long battle, Warren p ulled off a lastlap pass to nip Berluti at the wire. Hancock handles Ascot Speedway By Scott Da loisio G AR DEN A, CA, AUG. 25 When Greg Hancock was yo ung, he often was hed Bobby Schwartz' race bi kes. When he was a tee nager, Schwartz spo nso re d his J u nior Speedway effort. T h ursday at Chris Agaj ania n 's Ascot So uth Bay' Stadi u m, Hancock won the Handicap . m a in a nd j o in ed Sch wa rt z, his' mentor, on the victory ros tru m after Sch war tz took th e Scratch main. Hancock, riding the New York Seltzer/Penhall/ Reebok/STP/ Grin Weslake, bea t Scotty Brown off the 30 for second on the start. The leader, Bernie Tusko, came from the 20 bu t Hancock q uickly ca ught him. Steve Lucero was in fourth by the end of the second lap and was the fastest rider o n th e track. By the time they h it turn one on lap three, H ancock had wrestled the lead away from Tusko. Brown also got by T usko two circui ts later wh ile Brad O xley go t by Lucero. Oxley also got by Tusko at the halfway po int bu t th at is as far as he got. Brown made littl e ground on Hancock and when the race ended, he had to be content with second. Gary Hicks beat Schwartz in their Scratch semi and then drew the pole for the main, but wh en the tapes went up Schwartz rolled into th e lead. Once Schwartz got his CTI Bra ce/Budwei ser/Russell Grandstands/Malcolm Smith/K&N Weslake to the first bend, he pulled it down on H icks. And wh en Schwartz got a major dr ive off of turn two o n the second lap, the race seemed to be over as he had a com for table lead. Two laps lat er, Schwartz raced under the checkered flag for the win. Second went 10 Hicks while Lucero - and Oxley rounded out the four rider . field. . Results . SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schw.nz (Wes): 2. Russell, Schwartz · shine at Costa Mesa By Scott Daloisio COST A MESA, CA, AUG. 26 Bob by Schwartz and Steve Russell wo n the First Division mains o n the fina l night of the Nissanl7UP Series at the Ora nge County Fairgrounds. Coming from the difficult gate three on the start of the Scratch main, " Boogaloo Bobby" made it look easy. He flew off the line and set the early pace over longtime rival Alan "Crazy" Christian. Christian wasn't around long. He went wide as they ended the opening la p and dropped fro m second to la st. One circuit later, he wheelied out of tu rn four and bi t the cras h wa ll. O ut fro nt it was Sch wartz, but he had Steve Lucero breath ing do wn his tai lpipe. Lucero stayed close to the C.T.I Bra ce/Budweiser/ Cirello Ra cing/ Oakley/ Bell-sponsored Wesla ke and looked for a chink in Schwartz ' ar mor. T here wasn ' t a ny an d Schwartz took h is third of four main events of the week. Lucero fini shed one length back wi th Oxley in third. R u ssell , who ca me u nder Sch wartz' wing over the wi nter, proved that he had learn ed a lo t in his first-ever Handicap main. J esse Finch had the in itial lead but Russell too k it away in the first bend. Finch went down hard o ne circ uit later and out came th e red flag. The race was restarted with o ne lap down. Russell started at the fro nt while the penalized Fin ch was at the back. Tuff McBride and Billy H amill became embroiled in a war for second and that allowed Russell to expand his lead. . Sco tty Brown made a late-race charge and clo sed in on Hamill for the third spot. He gave Hamill a small tap in tu rn on e on the last lap bu t it failed to mov e Hamill out of the wa y. Brown then went wide off two and th at allowed Ga ry Hi cks to streak into third. That was the last pass of the even t and Russel l crossed the line first o n his Russell 's Grandsta n ds/ ST P / Mo m & Da d /Bobby Schwartz Weslake. Second went to McBride with H am ill th ird.
