Marsh all defeated th e crea m o f Euro pea n twin-cylinder ra cers in a fast and furi ous race, run over 12 laps of th e ch allengi ng 4.37-mi le SpaFr a n co rc h a m p s ci rcu i t. Fren ch policema n Marc G ranie took seco n d place o n hi s F l Ducati Pa n ta h after a ra ce-long battle with third-place finisher, Cycle N ew s correspon dent Al a n Cathcart on th e ex-Kevin Magee FI Duca ti, T here wer e no Am eri cans present for th e debut BoTT event a t Spa, but instead all th e leading G erman riders from just across th e border including Stefa n Schulz an d J ens H offman o n Moto-G uzzi s, a n d a fleet o f fast BMW s led by Mich ael Seeber on th e brilliantly enginee red VV m achine with builder Ul ric h Volkel's Elftyped hub-center ch assis design. Marsh all took th e lead a t th e start, track ed by a six-bi ke freight tra in through th e fast swee ps of th e pub lic roads co u rse. Seeber held second place o n th e first lap, followed by Granie, Schulz, Cathcart and th e two BMWs of Manfred Rettig and H a rt-' mut Mull er. Rettig elbowed his wa y 'u p to third with some bra ve riding, wh ile Cathcart sneaked past Schulz, who's Guzzi seem ed to 'be suffering fro m front end handling problems. . Marshall was trying all he knew to break away, but could n o t shake Seeber. " I knew that there'd be a lot of slower riders to be lapped in the seco nd half of the race," said Marshall. " So I tried to bu ild u p a cushio n in the early laps to have some thi ng in h and whe n we came to the traffic." He p artially succeeded, droppi ng Granie a nd Cathcart on la p two, as Re n i ~'s aggressive ride came to an end with transmission problems. Seeber was still in the Coswort h 's draft, occassion a lly tak ing a look up the ins ide, but bad lu ck struck th e Germa n ap proac hing half di stance. " I was co min g round La Source hai rpin in bo ttom gear wh en I saw a p atch o f o il h ad been dropped righ t in m y path, " explaine d Seeber. " I tried to avoid it, bu t co u ldn't." Seeber knocked the rig h t carburetor off th e bike in th e mishap, and lost too much time trying to refit it. Seeb er's mi sfortunes promoted Granie to seco n d pl ace, six seco nds behind Marsh all , but h e wa s soon overtaken by Cathcart on lap five. A lap later , th e bright yell ow Au stralian Du ca ti slo wed with clutch troubles, and G ranie took advantage to reclaim seco n d place. T h e Fren ch a nd British duo then staged a thrillin g battle, excha n g in g positi ons severa l times before Cathcart h it a neutral going up from Eau Rouge . on lap 11. Gra n ie took seco n d place, defea ting Cathcart by .35 of a second, 8.92 secon ds behind win ner Marsh all. Peterson pulverizes LACRMX By David Procida PAL MDAL E, CA, AUG. 14 Lisa Peterson finished up the fin a l ra ce of th e IRC Women's Championsh ip Series, run in conjunction with the IRC Tri-R ace Series, with th e o verall win toda y in the Expert class a t L.A . County Raceway, but it was Vicky J ackson who took th e series title. The series trophy presenta tion and ba rbeq u e foll owed th e day's racing. Peter son started in th e back of th e pack in moto one while Dana Evanson p o wered into the lead, bu t Peterson sliced through the pack and soon moved into third behind Jackson. Both Jackson and Pe terso n displaced Evanson, then the two ba uled side-by-side u ntil Peterso n p~lled ahead and took off with the WIn. Jackson rocketed into the lead to start m ot o two with Peterson and Evanson close beh ind. J ackson eventually bailed hard , handing the lead to Peterso n. As Peterson motored to the win, Bonn ie Warch slip ped by Evanson to take the runner -up spot a t th e checkers. Althou gh J ack son crashed out of co ntention, she sti ll picked up th e class champ io ns h ip, finishing the series j us t two points ahead o f Peterson. Warch Im p roved h er finishes eac h week to ta ke th ird in th e ser ies. Katy Sen ger took a wire-to-wire win in th e fir st Women 's Intermediate m oto. Sheila Moritz made a late-moto pass to tak e seco nd from Lori Hedstrom while Tina Zahrt . finished fourth o ver Maria Gonzalez. In moto two Senger holesho t an d led until she fell in a co mer. H edstrom moved by in a charge that would tak e h er to th e checkers first, but Senger sa lvaged second in th e rnoto for the overall win. Lisa Peterson won the Los A ngeles Co unty Racew ay round of the IR C Women's Series, but Vi cky Jackson t o ok the ser ies t it le. Sen~er also took th e class ti tle a fter fin ishin g first in almost every moto throughout the series. Enduro win By Duane Elle r BLACK RIVER FALLS, WI, JULY 29 Steve Narel, o n his Husky 430WR, narrowly edged his co nsta nt enduro riding companion Jeff Haasl , to win overall honors by better tie breaker scores. Bo th rid ers dropped 13 points, with third overall h onors going to l8- year-old Mark Holasek with 18 points on a Honda CR250. Hot, dry conditions in the Midwest ha s led to vario us cancellations and postp one me nts. Bu t, thanks to the cooperation of the Jackson County Forestry Board and some sp ecia l precautions by the Madison M.e. th e event went o rr without a hitch. Rain o n Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, with moderate 80 degree temperatures, m ade for o ne o f the prime riding days of th e; summer . An 18 mph first section, proved to be the u n doing of many past cham p io ns a nd a couple of Minneso ta SixDay Intent riders. The deceivingly fast trails caught many riders three to seven minutes hot at strategicall y located checks. Numerous C and B rider s fo u n d themselves zero in g checks with total looks o f surprise an d p leas u re o n their faces. After the first 20 m iles the speed average was raised to 24 mph to ins ure tha t a ll ri ders wou ld have some la te points. Haasl, o n h is CR500 was one Point u p on Narel a t th e beginn ing o f the seco n d 40-mi le loop. Bu t by th e end of both 17 plus m ile wood sections , Narel wa s alw ays in th e lead. At the fin al ch eck, a 30 secon d ~p left Haasle on th e n ext later mmute to give both riders a tie with the nod go ing to Narel. Mark Holasek appears to be one ' more of Minnesota's up a nd coming ri ders. With cons is ten t riding a n d timekeepin g , he easi ly topped th e 250cc A class. Hammond hot at LakewoodMX By Larry Johnson LAKE WOO D, CO, AUG. 7 Tobey Hammond easily won both motos despite some difficult conditions for the overall victory in th e 125cc Am ateu r class at Lakewood. R a in moved in a n d turned th e usually concret e-hard L a kewo od track into greasy slime, and th e only class that got both rnotos in before the races were cancelled was th e l25cc Amateurs. Mike Mathen y broke from th e gate first in round one , but lo st th e lead so o n after to Eric Ri ck e. ' Then Ma theny crashed hard an d H ammond moved into sec o n d . H e ' dropped R icke to second SOO Il after an d p u lle d away for the win. Ricke kept seco n d to th e finish a head of Brad Willems. . Hammond sho t from the gate in moto two and was go ne immediately. Matheny ran a distant second early, but Matt Sweney took over the position on lap th ree. He stayed th ere u n til th e la st go- 'round whe n h e overshot a berm at the bottom of a steep drop. J im Agnew took advantage and grabbed second where h e stayed for the last half-la p .
