Ca lifornia's Gordon Ward was one of the w inning U.S. team members at the USA vs . Australia Supercross in Sydney, Australia . Defending 1987 champ Jim Clark took second place with a time of 4.44 . seconds. XR H-D riders J eff Yoder and Lou Gerencer finished third and fourth with times of 4.52 and 4.56. When veteran Earl Bowlby brought his BSA to th e line i t wouldn 't start, but he go t i t going in th e 10 minute period and it quit at 80 feet. He qualified second for the meet but was setting on the bottom at the end of the first round. Bowlby did manage a 4.82 second ride in th e third round. This broke the old hill record but was only good for eighth place. ' Resu lts Aussie James Deakin co llected two wins at the Australia Supercross. Garfield He By Maxine Casey MUSKEGON, MI, AUG. 7 P au l P in so n n a u lt won the 540cc class and J oh n Williams took the 800cc class to become 1988 National Champions at 34 the Mt. Garfield Invitational National Championship Hillclimb. This is Pinsonnault 's first year on the professional circuit and the multi-time Amateur 500cc Champion has done very well. He finished fourth in the opening round at Elkhart, Indiana, and one fifth was his lowest finish. Scott Everett took second pl ace in the 540cc class riding a Triumph, wh ile . Greg Williams rode his STP Special Honda to a third place finish, climbing the hill in 5.24 seconds. Pinsonnault's winning ride lasted · 5.13 seconds while Everett stopped the clock in 5.23 seco nds. BSA riders Tim Frazier and Larry Licht fin ished fourth and fifth, respectively, with rides of 5.40 and 5.42. John Williams, form er World Cham p ion in the 500cc class, took his 800cc STP Special Honda over Mt, Garfield in 4.42 seconds, breaking the record set in 1986 by his son Wade. USA' victorious in Australia SX By Jeanne Sleeper SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, AUG. 12,13 It was close bu t the American team of Gordon Ward, Jim H o ll ey, Eddie Warren and J immy Ellis top ped the Australian team of Stephen Gall, Glen . Bell, Craig Dack and Peter Melton in the Coca -Cola Supercross Masters at the Sydney Entertainment Center. Saturday night's action was an every rider for himself affair, and it was '" Jim "Hollywood" Holley taking the win along wi th a check for $8000. Friday night featured the Ameri'cans versus the Australians, and the Australians versus the New Zealanders. Friday's heat wins went to Atkins (New Zealand with two wins), Dean Burt (Victoria with five wins), J ames Deaki n (Queensland with two wins) and David Armstrong (Queensland with one win). The evening's overall State of Origi n win went to Victoria. During the Friday noon pra ctice, American Warren took out teammate j o]o Keller in a collision that sent Keller to the hospital with leg and angle injuries. The USA squad was reduced to four, but Warren took up the slack. Warren put out a maximum effort, scoring heat wins in five of eight races. But in lap six of the eight lap main event, Holley, Warren and Dack were neck and neck. But Warren lai d his bike down and took down the trio, wi ping out pl aces 1- Dan Smith captured the Open Expert class win, Saturday, at the Huntington Beach M/C Dual European Hare Scrambles in Lucerne Valley. . , 2-3 in the race. Dack untangled his Yamaha first and li terally rode over the Holley/Warren wreckage to streak away with the win. Saturday's heat races 'saw the Americans win three of the eight races. The q uarter finals were won by Holley and Warren, while Australian 's G len Bell and Darryl Atkins claimed the final two quarter finals. Warren and Atkins, the New Zealand National champ, spli t the semi final wins. . The Last . Chance Qualifier had Americans Ward, Keller, Holley and Ellis, dicing against Gall, Shane King, David Armstrong and Dea n Burt. With only on e transfer spot open , the battle was fierce. Ward crashed ou t on lap two, Keller pulled off the track, and Holley forged ahead for the win. o At the start of the main, Warren and Atkins crashed together which brought out the red flag and a restart. The restart saw Dack take the early lead only to miss a shift as he headed up the steep Yokohama bridge. Dack slid down the vertical face a t the start of the third lap and was knocked out of contention. O n' the first' day , Smith trailed in third, beh in d Cli ff Thomas and Derrick Paiemen t after the bomb run and through the first loop of course B. He sai led past Thomas, wh ose bike seized going up the wash on the second loop , and got by Paiemen at th e top of the bomb during th e third loo p . . Perseverance paid off for H usq varna 's Dan Smith on the first day. On the second day of competition, Open Expert and Amateur' class riders charged through the bomb ru n on Camp Rock Road knowing that the firs t to .the marker trail would have the greatest chance of winning, due to the tightness of the course. But that was not the case as Ted Hunnicutt was able to escape the fate of those in front and eventually take the win. Dan Smith and C liff Thomas nearly collided, a n d the nearaccident was immediately followed by Smith and Tom Willis sailing side-by-side over a jump and touching in mid-air, ca usi ng Willis to go down hard. Smith later charged up the rocky hill, hit a rock 10 feet from the top , and found h im self airborne landi ng in the roc k pile. Following closely was Thomas, who didn 't see Smith's bike in the clo ud of dust and lau nched off it finishing in a spectacular endo. Alt hough he was unhurt , Smith's bike was through for the day. A shaken Thomas was able to remoun t eventually and slowlyfin ish the race for his points. Paiement was the first to race over the rocky hill with H unnicutt close on his heels . Two-thirds through the lo o p , P a iem ent was passed by H unn icutt. H u nnicu tt was first th ro ugh home check, wi th Paiem ent and Willis raci ng through together, 40 seconds behind him at the end of the first loop.
