Byrd back on top at Firebird Road Race By Naomi Bourne CHANDLER, AZ, AUG. 6 -Kell y Byrd recovered from las t month 's bo ut wi th troublesome tires to win three races out of four, but m issed the Yamaha contingency money in the AMA/CCS Heavyweigh t and Unlimited classes at Firebird International Raceway. T .C .lUSA Pro-Style Leathers-sponsored Byrd began lap ping th e field in the firs t. half of the Lightweight/Heavyweight Supersport race , and kept a strong lead until the fin ish. Brian Blangsted was the only rider even close to Byrd, and ran in second p lace the entire race. Nov ice racer Wad e Woodar d took first p lace in th e Ligh tweig ht class ahead of several Lightweig ht Expert riders. T u cson 's Kye Gunn, partially sponsored by the Chicago Bar & Gri ll, ch a llen ged Byrd in th e Unlimited GP. Their Suzuki GSXR750s d ueled for first with no o ther co mpet ition. Twenty-some miles later, Byrd took the checkered flag. Gunn, . back from his J u ly races at Laguna Seca ("It was like racing with a whole. field of Kellys l") came in a close second. Byrd 's only loss for the night was in the star-crossed race for Lightweight/Heavyweight Superbikes. The race was red -flagged after only a few laps due to a serious crash. Byrd regained his leading position after the restart, but passed under a yellow flag condition.
