Chri s G ardner passed Avon a n d Edelweiss Motorsports' Dale Kieffer on lap four for second, but Kieffer an d Nichols stayed in close pursuit. G ardner attempted to put some space betw een himself and Kieffer, but overcooked th e entra nce to turn four. G ardner made it a ro un d turn four, but was headed directl y at th e hay bal es pl aced o n th e ins ide of turn five's a pex. He swerved left to avoid th e ha y bal es, left th e track o n th e in sid e, an d rode through some loose ha y broken up in an earlier incident, th en back out onto th e track between turns five and six with hay in hi s wa ke. Gardner braked hard to avoid ru n n ing orr th e other side of th e track, and Kieffer and Nichols als o braked h ard to avoi d th e hay Gardner dragged o ut on to th e track. G ardner finished in seco nd pl ace a head of Kieffer a nd Ni chols, respectively, but both filed protests over th e inci de nt. The ra ce jury disallowed the protest in a sp lit decision. Kieffer appealed the decision, but th e can troversial decision was upheld. John Hopperstad also took first in O pen Superbike action, 'with fellow MRA ra cer Greg Nichols in second. KBER radio's Laird White passed Chris Gardner for third on the second lap. Rod Brueske, back in th e saddle of his own FZ750, captured fourth easily after Gardner ran out of fuel.
