Steve Burkholder grabbed the lead as th e 250cc Expert class exi ted th e seco nd turn , closely followed by Woods' Coors Light Silver Bu llet Harley, Tom Majeski 's T otal Mess Racing Yamaha and Georgie Price. At the end of the second lap Woods and Majeski had pulled to the front as Burkh older started to drift backwards. During the remainder of the race, only five yards separated the top three from each other. With Woods riding a controlled race in the lead, Majeski was riding the wheels off of h is bro th er's indoor bike to keep it in second. Majeski had earlier taken the 600cc Expert class in a wire-to-wire effort over a closel y bunched field as he put his D & S Cycles-sponsored H arley in front of teammate P rice, Camel Pro competitor David Mill er and Mik e Klop p. While Maje ski maintai ned hi s 10-yard margin, Klopp went into th ird a nd challenged Price for second the entire distance. At the n ag , Price took th e nod by inches. Bull too k the lead at the start of th e 750cc Expert final and pulled away to a fair ly comfortable mar gi n. During most of the race Nick Taylor and Gary Foard battled over second place, with Foard taking it with a better drive off the final turn. Several of the Amateur finals were very close , and were led by Rober t Miller's double wins in the 90 and 200cc classes. Miller grabbed the lead in the 90s from Ricky Wi nsett, Randy Shank and Todd WinsetL Miller kept Winsett about 10 feet beh ind d uring the entire race, whi le Shan k, the only expert ra ted rider in th e field, battled Todd Winsett for third, with Winsett taking third about hal fway, bu t Shank regained it as th ey bega n the final la p. On a relatively small , kidney-shaped scram bles tra ck laid out within the Bolado Pa rk Rodeo Grounds, it was Steve Sullenger and his Yamaha that topped the heavily-enter ed 500cc Junior class. In th e heat race it was Tracy Daw son that char ged to the front and stayed there. David Freeze charged through th e pack from a mediocre start and got up as high as second before he ran out of laps and time, while Sullenger cli mbed to third place at the checkers. Melvin Elias on ly went about 20 feet into the heat race when his chain locked up; he was to suffer the same fate in the final. In the l2- lap final fast starters Dawson, Kevin Gonzales and Sullenger were th e early battlers. Bob Pack worked up from a second ro w sta rt and then began slipping off th e groove and some of those he passed repassed. Dawson go t into a tan kslap~r and had h is attention take n, wh ich allowed Sulle nger and Gary Ri tch ie to motor past. Wh en the checkers came out the riders wer e fairly strung out so there were no rea l close finishes and no late lap challenges. Su llenger's win was a popu lar one with the assembled fans . . Pee Wee action saw a poor heat per fo rm an ce fro m Jake Keen ey, while Jesse Dawso n go t the win, but in th e final Keeney and his Catsby Ra cin g and Gatsby Automotivesponsored machi ne were unsto ppable. He took early command and avoided problems. • Results PIW 50 : 1. Jake Keene y (ya m); 2. Jesse Dawson (Yam); 3 . Lance Arnold (Ya m~ 4 . M ichae l Hannas (Suzj. M INI 60 NOV: 1.
