Fowler, Jackson fly at Perris MX ' By David Procida PERRIS, CA, AUG . 7 T erry Fowl er a nd Vick y J ackson won both motos for overall victories in the 250cc Pro and Women 's Exper t classes, respectively, at round two of the IRC Tri Race/Women 's Championship Seri es h eld a t P er r is Raceway. In the first 250cc P ro mo to Fo wler ' grabbed 'an early lead wi th T odd Campbell and Paul Vlach glued to his rear fender. Will y Mu sg rave charged up through th e ra n ks and flew into second. Musgrave moved in on Fowler an d for the next seven laps, the two battled it' o u t. Fowler held Mu sgrave off for th e win. Vlach scored a di stant th ird with Willy Surratt coming fro m dead las t " t o fourth. Mike H ooker snapped u p the holeshot in mo to two , bu t fell to Fowler and Musgrave. Fowler and Musgrave battl ed fiercely. In th e Women 's Ex pe rt class, Jackson too k less th an a lap to get by Suzu ki Racing Count ry's Dan a Evanson . Li sa Peterson also go t by Evanson and reeled Jackson in , bu t was unable to pass. Jackso n took th e wi n with Peterson sti ll attached to her rear fender, wh ile Warch m oved into thi rd at th e finish . In mota two Jackso n too k the holeshot with Peterson once again a ttached to her rear fender. Peterson took the lead and was helped when Jackson was involved in a pileup in th e horseshoe turn. First mo to action saw Gear RaceMi ke wear / O a kley-spo n sored Young pilo t his Ca giva to a clean hol esho t followed -by Fra nkie Brundage, Johnson, Ken Zahrt a nd G len T antum . Young slowly pulled away w ith J ohn so n working his wa y around Brundage for second. Shortly after taki ng com man d of seco nd J ohn son bobbl ed in a corner, allowing Bru nd age to retu rn to the runnerup po sition. " I don't know what happened," said Johnson, " I think I hit some- th ing which almost too k o ut my fro nt wheel. Brundage go t by a nd I went after him again. " As the race progressed J ohnson again negotiated his way into second and bega n ca tch ing You ng. On the seventh la p J ohnson ca ught the Ca giva p ilo t a nd with three laps to go J o hn son snuck around Young and moved in to first. As J oh nson chased You ng; Bru ndage fell back to eigh th all owing Zahrt th ird ahead of Pete Mu rray and Ro n Turner. Bailey KOD AK, TN, AUG. 6 Derek Titus trekked from Nevada to T ennessee and overcam e the slick, muddy co nditio ns to win th e 250cc C class at Foo thill Sports -Park. In th e openi ng mo to, Suzuki' moun ted T itus th undered o ut of the gate wi th a trem endo us holeshot. His enth usias m was q uickly destroyed wh en he stu ffed h is bi ke into an extremely slick first turn and wen t down hard, getting a face fu ll of mud and tire tracks across hi s back. T h is ga ve Kawasak i rider Tony McMahan j ust the chance tha t he needed, as he wen t on for the mo to win. To Titus' credit, he was able to p ick himself up and methodi call y work his way thro ugh the pack for second pl ace. Mot o two saw T itus attack the start in a more co nservative way, stuc k in midpack and once again having to conte nd with the roosting mud from the riders in fro nt. This time T itus dialed th e co ur se in and took the second moto win alo ng wit h the overall class honors . T he 125cc C class saw another Nevada hotshoe, Richard Saxton, take a page ou t· of his teamma te's race-boo k by seizing a first moto holeshot, only to cras h ou t badl y in turn o ne. Saxton easily worked h is way back through the field for th e win, p la yfully roosting mud in faces of riders who trie d to block th e trac k as he caugh t up with the m. T he second moto was all Sax to n wit h an easy wire-to-wire victory that sewed up overa ll honor s. In the 80cc Sen ior class David Dickerson, ridi ng a Yamaha, hooked up and blasted thro ugh the muck with no problem s. Dickerson man- 39
