Sisemore raced to the pits for a new helmet a nd bik e and returned to take first pl ace away from Ingels. Ingels and Sisem ore lined up in th e last heat tied in points after both rid ers won their first four heats . Rob ert Curry, on ly a point behind, was on th e pole trying to be the spoiler. On th e first try In gels had th e best position through the turn, but Curry a nd Sisem ore banged together with Sisemore taking the brunt of th e fo rce. On the restart Sisemore was on Joe Leduc's bi ke, and th e Sisemore fan s were worried. Sisemore ' ga ted better on th e second try,. just edging Ingels th rough turn one. On th e back ch ute In gel s worked the outsid e with Sisemore keeping pace o n the insi de. Sisem ore banged o u t a bike length on th e next go -aro und as In gels cou ld. not force the action. At the finish it was Sisemore with a perfect night, Ingels second overall as Curry's third place tied him with Yarrow for third overall. Bill Zirk le took an easy win in the Support Challen ge as a slippery trac k for this event gave th e riders some problems. Zirkle and Orlandi swapped the lead for the first two laps unti l Orlandi laid it down on lap three. Gary Stewart then chased after Zirk le on the last lap, but Zirkle was dialed in and left Stewart to follow. Pestana dominates at Baylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, AUG. 3 J eff Pestana easily won th e 250cc Pro class a t Bayl ands Ra ceway Park during CMC night motocross action. In th e fir st mota, three riders go t ~ over the gate before it dropped an d 'ano ther rider fell in th e gate mech an ism. The red flag ca me o u t to restart the race and to prevent a th reerider du al for fir st motohonors. T he restart wasperfect and it immediately became a battle between Ken Zahrt and Pestana. Before two laps had been co mp leted" Danny Pal adino joined the fray. The three front -runners put on an excell ent demonstrati on of co nt ro l and it was on ly wh en Zahrt made a slight bobble in a ri ght-hander that Pestana took final con tro l. It was a lap later 't ha t Pal adino got the better drive off the smaller tabl etop jump and took over second from Zahrt. They finished Pestan a, Paladino and Zahrt. In th e second mo ta , th e holesh ot belonged to Dennis Harmel, but he was a half length over the ga te before any of them dropped, so he was docked one lap even though he continued in the lead for the duration of th e mota. Unfo rtu na tely, Zahrt sto pped to exp ress start ing viol ations with th e flagma n and was a non-contender by th e tim e he resumed raci ng. In th e end, it was hard-riding Pestana in con trol as he won mota two a nd a n easy overall winner. Second overa ll went to Paladino with hi s 2-3 fin ish . T he relatively new professional, Phil Douglas, got third overall with his 6-2 performan ce. Mik e Hodges turned in a 'stellar pe rforma nce to win top honors in 250cc Beginner action. H e put two mota wins on the tot e board to dominate the class. His main com pe titio n in the 15-rider field came fro m Michael Matson. Diem wins East Coast Speedway C'ship By Todd Kroh GREENE, NY, JULY 29 & 31 Warren Diem overcame a wi ld and con troversial main event heat and stormed hi s way to the East Coast Speedway Championsh ip over Scotty .Bro w n , defending champ T om Burge and Ken P iepe r. The a nn ual two day event was sla ted to be held o n Friday and Saturday, but torrential rains and a lightning strike postponed the final fro m Saturday n ight until Sunday afternoon. Burge elected not to ride in th e qualifiers but rather to accept th e automatic transfer to th e nex t round that is a lways given to th e cu rre n t cha mpion. As th e riders moved out for the first main even t Brown sa t on th e pol e with Burge, Diem and Pi ep er al ongside. O ut of the ga te Brown took th e inside a nd Diem rod e th e outside until turn four, wh ere the controversy began. Diem went · down and Brown conti n ued, eventua lly following Burge home to the chec kered flag. Wh ether contact occu rred and wha t precipated th e con tact was th e question . Refer ee Don Hawkins reviewed severa l video tapes of th e race a nd finally excluded Brown. Main event two was much ca lmer as Diem grabbed th e gate, lea ving P ieper and Brown to dice it ou t this ti me. After two laps Brown took com ma nd, leaving Pi eper in third wi th Burge trailing. This left Diem with four points, Burge and Pi ep er with three a nd Brown with two. Mai n event three sa w onl y Diem and Brown ' fin ish as Burge went do wn o n lap one and Pi eperfollow ed su it o n lap three. The cro wd wanted a call from the referee on Brown aga in for both in cidents but none was forthcoming. That left Diem with a command ing lead . All he had to do was sco re in th e last main event and that is exac tl y wh at he did. Brown took off for the win foll owed by Burge but in th ird was Diem and he k new th a t was a ll th a t was req uired . Diem , who was the 1989 cham p ion but couldn 't muster a rep eat in 1987, gav e credit to the fans for spurring him on and his good friend Hank Bassett for his excellen t motor preparation, all owing Diem to get the most out of hi s Diem 's Cycles/ Blendzall/Keech Video Godden en route to th e 1988 ch ampionship. Results MAIN: 1. Warren Diem (8); 2. Scally Brown (7); 3. Tom Burg e (6); 4 . Ken Pieper (3). Douglas dustS BaylandsMX By Mike Vancil FREMO NT, CA, JULY 29 Phil Do uglas copped a first overall in the P ro class but managed only a second place in the Veteran Master Division tonight at Baylands Raceway Park. At the gate drop in th e first Pro mo ta Douglas wasn't quick enough to beat Den nis Harmel to the first corner. When they passed the second corner a nd entered the rockers section it became Douglas' turn to lead. He never relinquished the lead in this mota but he wasn't able to relax as H armel was right on him the whole way. . In the second motoI t was much the sa me for the first two cor ners but Hannel got past after the rocker section to begi n a battle that kept all in sus pe nse. Fi nally, in a mi d- l air pass over the big tabletop jump, it was Douglas who took com ma nd. J Again he held the poi nt until the checkers with Harmel not three feet behind. In Vetera n Mas ter class action it I was Dougl as and Du ane H ughes doing the battling up front on their Hondas. A few feet behind was Larry Baker. It was rare for Do ugl as no t to own the holeshot honors bu t he had to bow to Hughes a nd h is Commmand Smog/ Penins ula H onda /Cycl e G ea r- sp o n so red machine. It seemed tha t Baker was content to trail .on his Labtronix Metal Fab rica tors/Rock Oi l/Honda Pen insul a-sponsored machine as he waited for a m istake from the leaders that never cam e. Late in the first mota Douglas performed a move between turns one a nd two and took the lead, but in the end, it was H ughes with a 2-1 performance that ' topped Douglas' 1-2 evening. In the Vintage class Ron Dinapoli put his Elsinore Honda in the lead earl y in both his motos and walked a way with th e cla ss victory. Results . MIN I BEG: 1. A ngelo J acobo (Kaw); 2.
