Battaglia sweeps at Lake Ceneva MX By Jack Biddison LAKE GENEVA, WI, JULY 29 Brian Battaglia rode to a sweep of the 125cc Amateur races to grab first overall honors at Lake Geneva Raceway. His speed was so fast in the heat and feature that he lapped two riders both times. . Following the . heat race win, Battaglia announced that starting the next week at the raceway he would be riding the Pro class only. Remaining amateur riders cheered his decision. Bob Nebel scored a sweep in the 125cc Pro class, as he beat Jeff Blaha in both even ts. Terry Hahn, also scored a sweep in the 250cc Amateurs as Ken Pearson and Bill Menzel traded the runner-up spots in the heat and feature, with Jerry Rose taking a close fourth in each. Sweeps continued as Hahn rode unchallenged in the Open Amateur over Chris Benavides and Jeff Pulley. Eron Ezzerins won the Mini Cycle heat and was tak ing the lead in the feature when he ran into trouble and DNF in the feature. Miller moves at Lake Geneva MX By Jack Biddison 34 LAKE GENEVA, WI, JULY 22 A large field of riders invaded the Lake Geneva Raceway for the Suzuki Stadium Championship and Ryan Miller won the overall in the 125cc Amateur class: He won the feature after a second-place finish in the heat to Shawn Miller. Except for a poor start, that saw him riding in seventh spot in the heat race, Ryan. Miller might have had a sweep of the events . He was third on the fifth lap and chased Shawn Miller hard during the final circuit but could not get the lead. Veteran rider Terry Hahn swept both even ts in ' the 250cc Amateur class after holding off Doug Higgins in the heat and Jerry Rose in the feature. Hahn also swept the Open Amateur events as Chris Benavides rode second in both. Eron Ezerins swept the Mini even ts and Jeff Moore finished second in both. Moore had his wilTk cut out for him in the heat as he had a close battle with Brian Holzhauer. Moore did not get by him until the halfway mark in the race and then had to ho ld off Hozhauer as they passed slower bikes to the finish. Results 125 AM: 1. Ryan Miller (SUl); 2. J ones SACRAMENTO, CA, JULY 27 Scott Yarbrough came away as the big winner tonight by taking both of the main events. Yarbrough, aboard his Solano Concrete/Viking Computers/Cirello Racing/Brant Eng-sponsored Weslake, raced to victory first in the Handicap main, then came back and won the Scratch main for his first two victories this seaso n. Wh en the gr een came on Bill Zirkl e. took the ear ly lead in the Handicap main with J eff Brown and Rory Rundle cha sing. On the next lap Rundle fell out as Brown and . Yar bro u g h sli p ped p a st Zirk le. Brown ' led the next two laps as Yarbrough moved in . Harl an Bast Jr. edged into third behind Yarbrough. Brown slipped off the groove, going too wide and leaving the door open for Yarbrough, who took over the lead as Bast also moved past Brown. On the last lap Yarbrough was in command,. Bast in second with . Yarrow moving in to pick up the third SpoL Yarbrough pulled the pole position at the start of the Scratch main and Yarbrough held the inside with Dou~ Nicol working the outside cushion as they went through the first turn. Nicol hooked up first and moved to the lead down the back chute with Yarbrough right on his tail. Bast and Shawn Reppert battled for third just behind the other two. As Nicol hit turn three the wheels went out from under him as he found a slick part of the track. Yarbrough slipped past the fallen Nicol, taking over the lead for good. With Reppert pressing;Bast was unable to close on Yarbrough. Nicol recovered but was out of contention. At the finish it was Yarbrough with his second win of the night, Bast second and Reppert third. Bryan Barrett took over the lead mid-race and held off John Grant for his win in the Division Two main. Barrett got squirrely coming out of turn four on the last lap and Grant moved in for the pass, but Barrett recovered just in nrne to win by a wheel length. Ingles shines bright at Gold Country Spdwy By R.C . Jones AUBURN, CA, JULY 29 Eddie Ingels dashed to victory in the Scratch main, and Shawn Reppert won his first Handicap ma in in Division One action. Steve Martynse held off Joe Kell y in the Division Two main , and Dave Worthen took the Division Three ma in a t Gold Cou ntry Speedway. In gel s ga ted p erfectl y, as hi s helmet just brushed the tapes as they went up, to take a bike length lead as the four scra tch riders headed into turn one. Dave. Faria and Jim Sisemore were even through the first turn with Duane Yarrow squeezed out of the action. Ingels, aboard his A&A Racing/Peterich Cycles /Quaker .State/Champion/K&N Filters/Bellsponsored G-M, was in complete control after lap one as he raced to his third Scratch victory in Auburn. The second spot was up for grabs as Sisemore and Faria went wheelto-wheel for the four lapper. Faria, riding the outside, stayed even with the crowd favorite Sisemore. Faria took one too many laps on the outside as Sisemore grabbed the second spot for good during the last lap. Shawn Reppert, sponsored by Carpenter Racing/Slick Art/Day Tech Auto/Ice Castles and Smith Goggles, took the lead from tum one of the six lap affair, and after fighting off Sisemore on the last lap, picked up his first trophy this season. As Reppert led the pack, Sisemore worked his way through the traffic trying to track Reppert down. Flying with Sisemore was Faria as both riders worked the inside and outside around Harlan Bast Jr., Mike Parsons and Robert Curry. Faria moved quickly in second dogging Reppert from the outside on lap two. As Sisemore worked past Bast, Faria fell off the pace after slipping in the marbles. Parsons then cranked up an outside pass to slip past Bart as . Sisemore moved into catch Reppert. On the last lap Reppert shut Sisemore down in turn four garnering the victory with Parsons third and Bast fourth. Steve Martynse took over the lead on lap three of the Division Two main and held off the charging Joe Kelly for his win. Kelly pressured Martynse through the turns on the last lap as Martynse was able to keep control for a bike length win. Dave Worthen led for the entire five lap race for his trophy in the Division Three main. Worthen, riding his best this season, was smooth and consistent while the others tried to track him down. Templeton rocks Asbury MX Park By Kemp Hauser WESTFIELD, NC , JULY 24 Gear/Welcome Suzuki/Fiberglass Products/G&C Motors-sponsored Shane Templeton took advantage of the nicely prepared course to score a perfect four-moto sweep of the 125 and 250cc Amateur classes at Asbury MXPark. The first 125cc Amateur moto saw Templeton take the holeshot with early heat 'p ut on by David Hill. Templeton had control by the halfway point with Hill holding on to second ahead of Richard Heeter. Templeton had his work cut out
