Keenum claims
ReddickMX
By Gwen M illan
REDDICK, FL, JULY 10
Wes Keenum easily won the 125cc
A class at the sixth round of FMC's
8th Annual Summer Series.
The first moto saw Gear Racewear/Woody Kyle Racing-sponsored
Keenum in close pursuit of Derek
Youngblood. In a not-too-distant
third was Rick Chew.
By the third lap, the race was hot
and heavy as Keenum was challenging the front runner. As they came
around the front tabletop, they were
side-by-side. On the next lap Kee·n u m was close to Youngblood over
the front doubles. He landed badly,
giving Youngblood a bike length
lead.
On the sixth lap, Keenum got the
edge he was looking for and took the
number one spot. Youngb lood went
all out in trying to pass Keenum,
made contact with him, and both
crashed hard.
Youngblood was the first one to
regain 'con tro l, taking back his lead
on the white-flag lap. Keenum tried
hard to make up for lost time but
had 10 settle for second as the
checkered Ilag came out for Youngblood. Chew finished third.
Everyone hoping for another
match-up between Keenum and
Youngblood was disappointed when
Youngblood didn't show up at the
starting gate. Keenum had a clearcut victory this mota, with Chew
second.
In the 80cc Novice class, Michael
McRae led off the start. In second
was Lee Spann. In third was Logan
Murphy.
In the second lap, Spann was in control. On the next lap, changes
were still under way with McRae
back in first, Hinson moving up to
second (demoting Spann to third and
.Keith McQuaig following. On the
white-flag lap, Spann passed Hinson
and McRae for the lead and went on
to win, with McRae second, Hinson
third, and McQuaig fourth.
The same five were the frontrunners in the second mo ta . Coming
around after a la p were Mc Rae,
Spann, Hinson, Murphy and Brown.
Lap three was the end for Spann
when he went through the S section
and crashed hard, injuring his leg.
McRae lost to Hinson and failed to
recapture his place before malO'S
end. Logan Murphy was as delighted
with his third as Brown was with
his fourth. The overall scores saw
Hinson first, McRae second, and
Murphy third.

Harris, Newhouse top
Peaceful Cove MX
By Mike Thulsen
BOISE, 10, JULY 16
O'Neal/Smith Goggles/Maier/
Maxima/Desert Mtn. Cycle/Dadbacked Mike Harris used consistency
as . the key to victory in the 250cc
Expert class, while Honda 125-pilot
John Newhouse slammed the tenacious 125cc Intermediates at Owyhee
M/C's- Stadium Cross motocross.
Pro Circui t!Jack Oberbillig/Boise
Honda-supported Corey Barton, in
his first race in two yeaars, pulled
Steve Henry, Mark Hall, Harris,
John Palleria and the rest off the

a giant jump before th e fir st tum,
spectacularly crashing and putting
both of them dead last.
Barton remounted quickly to stab
and rip through th e dusty pack to
challenge Palleria as Harris made his
move on Henry to take over th e lead.
Suddenly, within a couple laps,
Barton jumped the double to vault
past Harris into first. Barton built
a cushion over Harris and Palleria
to take the win, with Hall finishing
fourth. Henry severely injured his
foot and was unable to complete the
moto,
.
Hall and Barton again clashed at
the beginning of the second mota,
this time lastin g one more set of
jumps before Barton went down and
forcing Harris off the track. Hall
cruised out front with Harris wi ldly
attacking the track to sli ce through
the pack, taking second and the
overall victory. Barton did not finish
after taking a hard hit over a jump.
While Michael Oliver blitzed both
125cc Expert motos over brother
Kenneth Oliver and Jamie Steelsmith, the hottest 125cc action of the
evening was in the Intermediate and
Beginner classes. Newhouse held
control of the first Intermediate moto
until the very end, when Pro Circui t!
Jeff Hicks/Boise Honda-backed Kip
Smith sliced into the lead. Newhouse
came back in the secondmoto to win
convincingly.
After winning the first 125cc
Beginner mota, Honda-mounted
Kirk Moore bailed in the second.
Moore hopped back into the chase,
charging by Chad Rich, A.J. Belcher,
and Steve Sabala to collect the
overall.
