The 125cc Intermediates did a lot of shu ffling around in moto one before th e winner was decided. Ray Crumb got th e gate only to have trouble on lap two, moving J ason Johnson into second. By lap three, T yler Edwards moved into th e number one position and held on, only 10 mi sread the flag and pull off thinking he won. Johnson took the win with Crumb second and Kurt Kuhn th ird: In mota two, Crumb again took over th e number one position and went o n to win th e overall with a 2-1 score. Hawthorne, 'Bradshaw battle at M~ddy Creek Motocross By Gary Crider BLOUNTVILLE, TN , J ULY 17 Yamaha 's Damon Bradshaw celebrated hi s 16th birthday by winning Lhr out of four Pro motos in the ee AMA-sanctioned Fourth Annual Volunteer Stat e MX Ch ampionship at Muddy Creek Ra cewa y. The even t doubled as round four in promoter Sam Gammon's seven-race, $50,000 Mega-Series. Bradshaw's sweep was halted in th e day 's final rnoto as T exan Dennis Hawthorne went by Bradshaw to win th e second 250cc Pro cont est. Georgia 's Lance Brannon clawed hi s way to th e top of the large 125 and 250cc C divisions while local ace Mik e Brown won all four mota wins in 125and 250cc B action . The 1.5 m ile natural terrain course was in near-perfect condition thanks to a Saturday night rain which moistened th e loamy surface. Over 300 riders from 14 sta tes ' were on hand for the Gear/Boyesen /Barr's Competition-sponsored event. Honda's Sean Dukes took th e hol eshot in th e openin g 125cc Pro moto only to see Fox /Scot t/PJ- l / Barr-backed Bradshaw go by on lap three of the seven -la p mota. Dukes led th e first 250cc Pro ahead of Ch ester until Bradshaw moved up from a mid-pack start 10 take the lead on lap five for th e win . Dukes was second over Chester and Steve Childr ess. Ha wthorne's energy-conserva tio n seemed 10 payoff as he took th e holeshot in the final moto, settin g the stage for a fight with Bradshaw. Brad shaw closed th e gap at midmota and th e cro wd wen t wild as th e pair raced wh eel-to-wheel. Bradshaw slipped past but bobbled on the same lap, giving the lead back to Hawth orne who held for th e win over Bradshaw, Dukes and Childress. Bradshaw said, " I might have been abl e 10 stay with Hawthorne at the end, but I would have had to take so me chances. I wasn 't feeling too good because I was up late last night - at my birthday party." Mike Brown's sweep of the 125and 250cc B motos seemed easy as he led every lap in all but one moto, In that mota - the first 125cc round Brown got a way about e i ~ h t h . Brown was ted n o time sli ci n g through traffic and, on th e third lap, Brown took th e lead from Todd Neal 10 win. Yarrow back at Bay'ands Speedway By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CA, JULY 21 Duane Yarrow and the Snooky Weslake are definitely back on form , - as the former northern California champ sliced and diced hi s way 10 the Scratch main win at Baylands Rac eway Park's Class A Speedway while Shawn Reppert bagged the Handicap main on his Sli c/Artbacked J im Leonard Racing Special. With National qualifiers in swing, some of th e Baylands regulars have been in southern California, but the ra cing only proves to get closer and better. Brian Pecore led au t th e Handicap main but found himself th e obvious victim and went down to Reppert and John Houston Jr. Reppert kept up the pressure for th e win over H ouston with Pecore third over Steve Martin. Yarrow proved that last year's injuries were far behind when he downed Martin in a featured match nice after handily w inning his heat and semi. Houston had th e pole for th e Scratch main with Yarrow drawing th e wall and getting out quickl y to point in fro nt of Mik e Solis and Kid Curry. Solis held on for seco nd as Yarrow was gone. Steve Martynse won his fourt h Division Two main with a fine ride, holding off Gar y Ro ssi and the Santa Rosa Cycle Special. Kerry Puccio was again held to third in some fan cy passing m an euvers whil e St a cy Ledou won Division Three over form er AFM number one Frank Mazur who decided early in th e eveni ng th at he cou ld als o be big tim e in Class A speedwa y and proved it by taking and passing th e fall down test, rode to second during hi s heat and second in his very first ma in.
