Moto one saw Chris Rapp hol esho t with J oh n Thorton and Darr yl Dobbin s behi nd the pack into turn o ne. On lap two Rapp fell 0[[ h is H onda in th e bowl corner and remounted in n inth, giving the lead to T ho rto n. T horton had Dobbins an d Kevin Weston on his tail, but held th em 0 [[ until lap six when he failed to appea r, handing the lead over to Dobbins. Dobbins pi cked up the pa ce, while beh ind him Weston ca me under a ttack fro m Olson. Ol son sli pped by on the last lap, bu t Dobbins was lon g go ne and took the chec kered foll owed by Ol son , Jim Humphrey, w h o a lso bl ew b y Weston , and th en Weston a nd Craig Fla nd ers. On lap six, O lson again stuc k his wheel outs ide of Rapp and as Rapp tried to bl ock his op ponent, Ol son touched his brak es and dove undern eath Rapp, taking the lead a,way. Humphrey was still ru nning in third, but had o pened up a gap on Dobbins. At th e checke red, it was Ol son , Rapp, a nd Humphrey in th e top three positions . When th e total s were pos ted, Ol son's 2-1 gave h im th e overa ll with Dobbins'l-4 eaming him second fl ace hon ors. Hump hrey's pair 0 th irds gave him the number three slot. In 250cc Beginner action, Rand y Van Dyke put hi s Rocket Rex Racing Yamaha into th e winner 's circle by runn ing a way with both motos. Rogers roosts at Fossil Bowl MX By Butch Pharness CLARKIA, 10, JULY 17 SMS-sponsored Scott Rogers and his Honda tallied up a 2-1 score for the overall in the Old Timers class at th e Fossil Bowl. At the drop of the gate, it was Mike LaMastus powering to the holeshot with Sco tt Rogers and Denny Blankenship a few yards back. Gary Daggett was fourth into th e comer and first in the O ver The Hill class' with Mik e Pentland ro u ndi ng out the top five overa ll and second in th e O ver The H ill class. LaMastus slowly pulled away from th e pack. Blankenship was keep ing Rogers in sight until halfway through the moto, when he started to tir e. Dogge tt had been trail in g Pentland since the second corner for th e firs t half of th e moto. Wh en th ey sta rted up " Devi l's Drop," Doggett powered around Pentland. At the finish it was still LaMastus o ut fro nt with Rogers and Blanken sh ip second and th ird for the Ol d Timers. Doggett held on for th e win over Pentland in the Over The Hill class . Mo ta two wa sn 't so easy fo r LaMastus as Roger s was in hot puruit from th e start. LaMastu s got th e hol eshot, but Rogers went u nder h im for th e lead . Blankenship was running third. Doggett and Pen tland had their won d uo for th e lead of th e O ver The Hill class. Up fro nt, LaMastus was looking for a way arou nd Rogers as the y entered .the whoop section. Rogers elected to take them o ne at a time - opening th e door for LaMastu s as he doubled four sets out of six , taking th e lead. On the white flag lap it looked as tho ug h LaM astus had won over R og ers, but trou b le struck. As La Mas tus was mak ing h is way th r o u g h th e w hoop section , he landed wro ng, causing h im to loose all the gro und he had ga in ed o n Rogers and a little more. Ro gers went on to win th e moto with LaMastus in seco nd and Blanken ship ta king third. The Doggett -and Pen tland du o went down to the wire with Doggett com ing o u t on top. Lewis hot at Butterfield MX By Ken Faught TEMECU LA, CA, J ULY 17 J immy Lewi s pro ved th at th e 106 degree temperature was n't th e o nly hot ite m in Temecula as he narrowly edged out Ron Wood in th e Fourstroke Mini class to win .round two of th e C MC Summer Series at Butterfield. . When the gate dropped at th e start of the first moto the ND Spark plugs/ Ro ko Sp orts/Kal-Gard/IRC·sp on· sored Le wis h oleshot J eff Neal , Wood, Sean Marlando and Roger Doggrel l. En teri ng the first tum Neal dove under Lewis to take over the lead , but it was short-lived as Lewis q u ickly repassed h im down the back straigh t. . While Lewis expanded his lead Wood began challenging Neal for second. As the two riders launched their XRs over a tabletop jump, Wood swapped and almost too k the pair out, but he quickly regained 'con trol and followed Neal into th e next turn. Wood soon found h is way around Neal and set after Lewis. Wit h on ly two laps rem ainin g Lewis encountered bike problem s which allowed Woo d to immediately close in. "There was a muddy turn in the back and I gu ess I go t wat er o n th e air filter, " said Lewis. "A t first I though t th at th e choke was on , bu t when I reached down to tum it 0 [[ there was nothing wrong. " A battle was crea ted as Wood challe nged Lewis for first. Wood chased Lewis to th e checkers where they fin ished ahead of Neal , Doggrell a nd Marlando. Second-mote action saw Wood come back to hol eshot Lewis, Doggre ll, Neal and Marlando . Aga in Wood and Lewis pulled away from the pack with Wood in control. Lewis soon changed all of th at as he snuck past Wood to take over the lead. As Wood co ntin ued to keep up his end of the pressure,Doggrell had moved in on th e two riders. On th e last lap Lewis and Wood tangled in the back section, causing Wood to lo se h is mom entum. As Wood struggled to get back up to speed Dog~ell too k co mmand of second. LeWIS took the checkers first and Wood overj u m ped th e fin ish li ne table top in hopes of bea ting Doggrell to th e last tu rn , but it was no good. Doggrell took the ru n ner-up p o sition over W ood, Nea l and Mar lando. A 2-1 score gave Lewi s th e overall win. Wood captured second wi th 13.
