Wicker finally pulled away and set hi s sights o n Zahrt, leaving Black to duel wit h J on Wilson until Wilson-bailed off the triples. Wicker worked up to within challe nging distance of Zahrt, only to lose it in a co rner to let Black by. Wicker recovered quickly and reeled in Black, fin all y diving under in a corner to rega in second. In the seco nd moto Zahrt again grabbed the lead and pulled away from Black a nd Wicker. wh o battled fo r second unt il Wicker forced h im self into the inside and made a pass stick. J ULY 24 There was quite a show in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes at today's CR C Motocross at Los Angeles Coun ty Racewa y. J eff Mabery . a Yama ha rider also sponsored by }T. Silk olene, and Racetech , was up against A.J. Wh iting. a former factory rider no w riding as a privateer. Mabery took all four hol eshots and held th e lead for th e first half of every rnoto. Ex perience to ld the di fferen ce. however. as Whi ting took th e lead awa y in each moto with some flash y moves clearl y honed in Natio nal co mpetition. Mabery never ga ve up and chased Wh iting right to th e checkered but had to settl e for seco nd in both 125 and 250cc Pro clas ses. J eff Barbacovi could only watch as the two fou ght for the lead in th e 125c c cl asss a n d fin ished third overa ll. Adam Pontious, riding for KTM of Mojave. smoked the 250cc No vice clas s. The Honda-mounted Pontious dom inated bo th motos, ta ki n g- instant leads in both starts and simply motoring away from all the competitors. Rob Webb took both seconds and Todd Peterson rode to a tie for th ird in th e same class. taking th at spot wi th th e better second mo to finish. Albert Sanchez also parlayed two excelle n t starts into strong wins in the l25cc Novice event. Wh ile Sanchez had no problems. Tony Su lek got two di smal starts the n rode the seat cover off of his Kawasaki in both mo tos to finish th ird and seco nd fo r second overall. . In the l25cc Int erm ediate class Bubba Eri ckso n went fro m gate to flag in the lead to take the number one spot. R yan Carlisle started slow ly in both motos and fin ished th ird in mo to one. Ca rlisle was moving up ra pidly in mot o two when he stop ped severa l times. attem pting to clear something fro m his eye. H e was finall y forced to retire when he was unabl e to get his vision back. Scott Murphy led mo to o ne fro m start to finish in th e 250cc Intermediate class. H e was foll ow ed by J oel Tokarsky and T odd Broussard. Broussard grabbed the early lead in moto two. foll owed by Mu rp h y and Tokarsky. Murphy went for the lead on lap fo ur but went down ha rd. dro pp ing to and staying in fourt h . T wo duels immediately began as Vargus tried to ge t aro und Paiement and Black did his best to pass Lewis for th e. lead. Vargus worked hi s way past Paiem ent and Black o u tjumped a fading Lewis to ta ke first. Vargus slip ped under Lew is to take second. T he second rnoto started th e same as Lewi s 'gra bbed the holeshot and held it wide open wire-to- wire to take the overa ll win. Allen, Brennan top Wapella Scrambles By Bill Holt WAP EL LA. IL. J ULY 10 David Allen powered his Coppertop Lounge/Peir ce' s Yamaha to strong class wins in both th e 125 and 250cc divisions. as did Gary " The Mad Bom ber" Brennan in the 400cc and th e Senior classes on a rough and dusty Bloomington-N o rmal M/C scra mbles track. Allen warmed up to his task for th e da y by running up i n the powder to hold off Richard H art and Chad Barth for th e win in th e 125cc clas s. In th e 200cc class th e local hero. Greg Vogel. met his match - John Lambri ck. Lambrick followed Vogel into th e first turn and through most of th e first lap but once he got by he was able to fight off the challenges of Vogel for th e win. Steve Vigen had th e best seat in the house for the duration as he kept it close in third. Allen passed up a spot on the front row in th e final to take a spot on the groove in the second row . No one cou ld guess what his strategy was but the crowd was on its feet as the green light flashed for the 250cc final. Allen swept to the outside of turns one and two and by th e time he hit the downhill right-hand tum he had passed the field using the line that everyo ne had avoided a ll da y. The o utside of th e turns lay six inches deep in silt and Allen was th e o nly rider all da y to use it effectively. Those first two turns put him in fro nt of Dan Carter and hi s Suzuka/ Blendz oil H onda and Carter seemed able to outri de everyo ne but All en . Doni H oleman slip ped by Dana McN eil in the middle laps to grab the th ird spot with Peter Barnosky fifth. Brennan sho t into the lead of th e 400cc final and was never headed or seriously challenged. The racin g was for the second spot which was won by " Augie" Augenstien over Tom Sutton. Brennan came back to ~t another bullet holeshot in the Senior final. J ULY 9 Teddy T aylor di d a great job of riding to night at H ill s Ferry Speedway, takin g win s in th e Pro-Am and Open Expert classes. . In th e three heats of P ro -Am riders. T aylor won his hands down o n h is Wood s-Rot ax. H onda rider Bobby McDow ell took first in hi s heat and Michael Gr esh am , riding a Rotax , passed H arley-Davidson rider Mark Key just before the checkered flag to take over first in the th ird heat. In th e Sem i J ose Agu ilar led the pack wire-to -wire with Kevin Bricker co mi ng in seco n d foll o wed by J immy Sanchez for tra nsfers to the main. In the mai n event . Taylor grabbed the holeshot with Gresham falli ng into seco nd j ust ahead of Mar k Key. McDowell slid into fourth then went wide when he tried to get by Key and ended up in th e lOth spo t. Wi th a narrow groove. Taylor. G resh am and Key held th eir respec tive p laces followed by Ro tax ri der. Rob ert Dam ron. in fifth . McDo well was on ly ab le to recover up to eight h whi le the first five riders rem ain ed th e same. wire to wire. In the Ope n Expert class heat races T aylor agai n wo n h is heat. McDowell also won his heat . and Ro tax rider Frank Nye won his. In the main event T aylor sho t into the lead with Paul Iwanaga gra bbing second o n a Honda. Damron was th ird with Mc- · Dowell fourth and Nye fifth. These positions were held for the first five of th e 15-lap main when Damron and McDowell were abl e to get by Iwanaga on th e inside as Iwanaga went a little wide coming out of turn two on the sixth lap. McDowell was abl e to throw a wheel on Damron and took over second. After th at . he rode hard to catch Taylor and tried to get ar o und. Taylor and McDowell
