J UL Y 10 Kawasaki Team Green member " R ocket" Rex Staten dominated the Vet P ro class today at the 5th Annual SMX Vet Nationals at Perris Raceway. 26 In mota one, Staten put his PVK 'KX500 out in front al - most immediately with J eff Haase riding in his roost. A,S State n p ushed o u t to a com fort able lead over H aase. Danny San ch ez had his hands fu ll in third as Mike Tripe s was o n th e gas and attempting to find a line around th e H onda rider. a nd o n lap three Sa nc hez surrendered th e position as he fell back. Sta ten had o pene d up a lar ge lead o n H a a se. who was n ow being h o un d ed b y Ka wa sak i KX1 25mounted T ri pes. Runn in g a strong fo u rt h was Ala n O lson. aboard a Ka wasa ki KX250. whi le Kin Goldie was a ttem p ting to hold o ff Sanc hez for fifth . T ripes suffered a poor start. but was o n th e move a nd soo n closed in o n Olson. At th e ha lfway point Staten o nce aga in ha d a sizable lead o n Sa nchez with Tripes now in third ahead of Haas e. Ol son. a nd Goldie. Sa nc hez disappeared on lap seven . moving H aase to second. Olson held third as Tripes fell back to fourth. As th e moto came to an end Staten too k the win over Haase. Tripes wo rked around Ol son late in the mota ' for third. followed b y Goldie in fifth. Staten took home th e first-place purse. Haase second. with T ripes go ing 3-3 for third overall. Ol son was in th e fourth and the last paying position. Vet Expert class actio n saw Mark White put his Granada Yamaha / White Bros. YZ490 in front of Greg Berg and Tracy Hrach. White pulled away with the lead as J on Miller carved hi s way up and passed Berg at thebeginning o f lap three. while George Kohler pressured H rach for fourth. The two riders soon closed "o n Berg and H ra ch went by. Kohler pased Berg a sh ort time later and began to reel in Hrach. Exiting a corner. Kohler pulled a giant wheelie. Hrach hesitated and Kohler was by. White took th e checkered flag first with Miller. Kohler. Hrach a nd Ken Dieder ich ro u ndi ng ou t th e top five slo ts. In rnot o two Wh ite led Ber g . Miller. Kohl er. H rach and Diederi ch a t th e start. White motored a way as Miller slip ped by Berg. On la p two Donovan p u t a fast move . on Norkin a nd Ch avez moved into fir st. Both Norkin a nd Dick a lso slip ped by Chavez. Donovan got some heat fro m Dick a nd th e two riders pulled a way fro m Norkin. After three laps of dogging Donovan. Dick got by a nd took the checkered flag with Donovan o n hi s rear fender. Peter Allison worked hi sway to third with Mark Matheis and Steve Clark breaking into the top five positions. , At the start of moto two Donovan went down as Norkin led Allison and Chavez. Alli son quickl y got around Norkin and opened up a lead. and by lap five Norkin and Dick fell back 10 midpa ck . lea ving Cha vez and Matheis a lone to duel over second. Allison went on 10 ta ke th e checkered ahead of Chavez and Matheis. and when th e results were tallied Alliso n's 3-1 proved good enough for the overall win. In the Vet Novice class. David Mi nnick left the rest of the pack in his wake. J im Pierce and Gary Warner jockeyed for second with Cam Cameron on the gas in fourth. Cameron stuffed by Warner. but found it slightly more challenging to get by P ierce. O n lap fou r. Greg Erickson moved into th ird with Schiel close behind. T he tWO ri ders
