DeMastry too k th e lead u ntil th e third lap when Pingree edged around him in a curve, staying out in fro nt for the finish. The second moto found Pin gree and DeMa str y a t it again with Pin gree ma naging to hold DeMastry off , cinching the overall win for this class. DeMastry gained second overall for the Intermedi ate Modified class but stepped down for a thi rd overa ll finish in the Interm ediate Stock class. Buchli, Newell nail Berthoud MX wins By Larry Johnson BERTHOUD, CO , J UNE 19 For one of th e few times th is seaso n, all the top riders were at Berth oud and when th e dust had settled, class 'po int s leaders T im Buchli a nd Dave Newell took home the go ld in the l25cc a n d 250cc P r o classes, respectively. When moto one of the l25cc Pro s started Gene Bashline was in front but Buch li , Keit h Campbell and Art DeH off p ushed h im to fourth by lap two. Other top contenders Gill Murra y and Stacey Cook were seventh and 10th and Kip Sandell, after a second turn crash, had al ready passed nine riders for 15th. Buch li never surrendered th e lea d , but Campbell pushed him all the wa y to th e finish , while Cook rea ched third right in fr ont o f Murray. Sandell finish ed six th beh ind DeH off. Co ok led R o bert Revoir and Buchli to turn o ne of moto two, th en Revoir quickl y took the lead with Cook, Buchl i, Campbell, Sandell , and Murray in tow . Cook regained the lead befo re the end of th e lap, but cras hed sho rtl y after. H e cremo unt ed sixt h, as Sandell blew by :,everyone for th e lead. By lap four, Sandell was pullin g away from Buchl i, Revoir , Campbell and Cook. Sandell went on to win ahead of , Buchli, Cook and Campbell. Buchli, riding with a badly injured wri st, easily outscored Cook and Campbell for the overall. Newell led ro u nd one of the 250cc Pros from flag-t o-flag, wh ile Corey Cope and Derek Brown diced for Jeff Darland (1) gets the jump on his line of Expert class riders at the Snowflake 100. Darland won overall . , seco n d, which Cope eve ntuall y claimed. Bob H anrahan edged Cook for fourth, as Cook struggled to reach fifth afte r starting 21st. Cope hol sho t ro und two, a nd by lap two, he and Coo k were in a tight d uel for the lead which would last for six laps. Newell was back in fifth, with Bro wn in seventh. Cook finally got aro und Cope j ust as Newell was , joini ng the lead ers, with Brown up to fourth. Honda CRSOO-mounted Russell averaged 40.90 mph o n his AXOI USA Sport/Dirt U nlirn ited/ Apache . H onda-Yamaha machine to cla im third overall in a tro uble-free ride. Mark Mill er claim ed first in the 200cc Expert class on his 125 Cagiva sponsored by Cagiva of No rt h America and averaged 37.03 mph o n a track wh ich favored Open class speed to finis h in eigh th overall. Tim Abril rode his H o nda CRSOO to th e Open Amateur win wi th an I I th overall fin ish at 38.52 mph. T odd Davis, Scott's brother, smoked the 200cc Amateur class with his '87 Kawasaki KXl25 for 12th overall. Mik e Ski llings took his Honda to an early lead in mo to one wi th Rick Spauldi n g in second. Gordon moved up through th e pack and sli pped past both Spaulding and Skillings o n lap two for th e lead. On lap th ree Mark Carey blazed by Skillings, wh ile Rob Robey had al so closed in on Skillings and Carey. The three riders raced up the fin ish line hill, made con tact and cras hed, crea ting a road block for the rest of th e class. Dan Luke, promoter of Shady Hillside, ra ced by the downed riders to tak e over thi rd place. Gordon won wi th Skill ings and Luke in seco rll:l a nd th ird. In mo to two Gordon p ulled the holeshot and led wire-to-wire. Bruce Sh anno n ra n seco nd while T im Flanaga n go t a m uch better start and ra n third for the entire moto, Bo th Skillings and L uke managed to ge t caught in the back of th e pack and worked hard to salvage a top finish. In the Over 25 class Gary Perryburn and Bra d Jones raced to the first turn, but both riders went wide and Ra y Waddell slipped his 350 KTM underneath for the lead. Jones stayed close to Waddell and on lap two made his mov e wh en Waddell missed his line. Jones took th e lead over th e doubles for th e win wh il e SCOlt Hochstein worked on Waddell. Time ran ou t, how ever, and Waddell held hi s ground fo r second. -In rnoto two , Jones made it a wireto-wire win whil e all eyes were focused o n th e race for seco nd.
