Jr.• pulled off the Scratch main win at Baylands after struggling early in the season. Miller muscles to Trail·Way ST win · . By Len Breech 38 HANOVER, PA. JUNE 25 Led by Dave MiIler's first win in almost 10 year s in the Senior class , two other riders scored their first class wins of the year, as Trail-Way Sreedway rea ched the halfway point o its '88 short track season. Mike Varnes took his first win in the 250cc Expert class, as he took his second 250cc win in three weeks in district competition, while Mike Klopp took the 600cc Expert class in his third week on his recently acquired machine. Miller's win in the Senior class was made more surprising since he and another rider crashed hard at the beginning of the third lap, .causing a restart. On the restart, Richard Foard grabbed the lead and looked like he was going to back up his 750cc Expert win with another win. Miller gated fourth behind Foard, . Bob Babcock and Joe Heberling. But riding like a man possessed, Miller started a drive to the front, putting his Cycle Experts Honda in the lead as, they went down the back straight on the sixth lap and pulled away to a several bike length margin. Lew Woods was the first 250cc Expert out of the second tum with Mike Varnes, Paul Crumling and Jett Conrad following behind. By the beginning of the second lap, Varnes put his Penn State Cycles Suzuki into the lead. With Crumling drifting back, Dave Duhaine moved into .third at the end of the third lap, while Georgie Price moved up from the penalty line to battle Conrad for fourth in the late laps that went to Price. Joe Gately jumped in front of · Richard . Foard, Jim Hollister and Clarence Bull at the start of the 750cc Expert final. After battling for five laps, Foard took the lead at the start of the sixth lap, with Bull working his way into second as th ey came off the second turn. In the remaining laps, Foard put his Ridge Sheet Metal-sponsored Triumph several lengths in front of Bull. A pair of the "Terre Hill Mob" also took a win each, with Ken Yoder easily outdistancing Chuck Wrecsies and the remainder of the 250cc Amateur field by almost a straight. With Tom Cerciello out of action due to injuries, and many of the Pro riders in Lima, Ohio for the National, the timing was right for a new winner in the 600cc Expert class, and Mike Klopp took advantage of it, putting his Rotax-based machine in front of Jim Hollister, Paul Crumling and Ri chard Foard. After Foard worked his way into second, he and Klopp started to pull distance over the others, with Hollister, Crumling and Georgie Price getting into a battle for third that went to Price by halfway. At the end, Klopp had almost a half a straight margin over Foard. ' Results 55 : 1. J ohn Winsen (yam) : 2. Josh Voung (Yam); 3. Dan Halligan (Yam). . 750 EX: 1. Richard Foard (Tri); 2. Parsons pulls off .Baylands Spdwy win By Bi!1Spencer FREMONT, CA, JUNE 23 After struggling through the early months of the season at Baylands Raceway Park's Thursday night Class A Speedway motorcycle racing, Mike Parsons and the Donny Brown Racing tearn put things together to win the handicap main. Eddie Ingels copped his second straight Scratch wm and closed up the point championship battle as Jim Sisemore had to scratch from both main events with mechanical misfortunes. Brian Pecore led the Handicap main on his Jim Williams Racing special with John Houston, Jr. charging hard but getting off line while Parsons held off charges from both Duane Yarrow on the Snooky Owens Weslake and Ingels' Quaker State Special. Powering off turn four for the white flag , Parsons executed a lovely slide around the inside of Pecore and wheelied to the win and 'the adulation of the fans for a fine performance. Pecore held his ground for second over Houston, Ingels and Yarrow. . Parsons returned for the Scratch main with a double win on his mind as he drew the pole while Marlboro Construction/Team Trim's Steve Martin drew the wall, leaving Ingels with a lot of middle ground with Sisemore out of action. Ingels got a good start but powered the first turn too hard and Parsons led down the back straight with Mike Varnes (2 6) lead s the w ay in the 250cc Expert cla ss at Trail-Wall Short Track. He's chas ed by Len Woods (2) and Dave Duhaine (Suz) . . & Martin chasing closely. In typical Ingels fashion, .the Petrich Cycle/ A & A Ra cing special went for the rim and rode outside, against the wall to make the pass stick and take the win. Martin drew alongside for a close second right at the checkers. Kerry Puccio won the very intense and crash infested Division II main with Charlie Venegas a close second on the #1 Bicycle Shop racer. In the Division III main Donny Boatman rode the Service Specialist/ L<;>s G~tos MC special to a wire-toWIre win. Results '. (Han); 3. Steve Nicholson (Suz); 4. Jeff Anderson (Yam); 5. Bonham bags SahvaroMX Zahrt hot at Baylands MX By M ike Vancil FREMONT, CA, JUNE 22 Kenny Zahrt took double-moto wins and the overall victory in the 250cc Pro class at Baylands Raceway Park. In th e first moto Jolin Dauth had .the point but after several tries Zahrt finally squirted past Dauth and took th e lead . The order at the checkers was Zahrt, Dauth and Eric Sandstrom. In the second moto Zahrt got the holeshot. For several laps Sandstrom tried to find a weak spot in Zahrt's defenses, but there was none. This moto ended with Sandstrom still in second and Dauth in third. Phil Douglas took his 250cc Honda four-stroke to four moto wins. He took wins and only wins in the 250cc Intermediate and Veteran Master class and was stylish all the way in all four rides. . The l25cc Intermediate class was dominated by Michael Minjares on a .Suzuki sponsored by Goose Brothers Racing. Minjares won both motos against Joe Bruce, Dave Rogers, Steve Bonita and Fabricio Ciaucopleui, a South American motocrosser who now calls San Jose home. Res ults . BO BEG: 1. Clayton Keates (Vam); 2. Mike Hodges By Karen Guthrie TUCSON, AZ, JUNE 25 Dan Bonham outlasted Frank Febbo to win the Pro class in the final round of the National Motosport Association Qualifiers at Sahuaro Raceway. Bonham and Febbo came out of the hole neck and neck , remaining that way through most of the first lap. The rest of the race was spent pl aying a cat and mouse game in the curves and straightaways. Just when Febbo appeared to be gaining a lead, Bonham would come from behin . and overtake him. But by the next round, Febbo would recover , turn it on and reclaim the lead. On the final lap, Bonham appeared to have it all sewn up when Febbo turned it on in a last-minu te effort which shot him over the finish line with a slim win. • The second moto was less dramatic as Bonham took the lead and kept it for most of the race. Febbo remained close behind but was "just too tired" to give him the same grueling competition as in the firs t moto. This gave a first overall to Bonham with Febbo second and Scott Keyes third. Shaun Cisco and Jimmy Dyer used the tabletop jump as a launching pad as they battled out third place in tlie first moto of the l25cc Novice Stock class. Several times they flew higher than the power lines and landed only a few feet short of the hairpin turn. When th e dust cleared, Cisco took third over Dyer with Travis Hodges and Pete Wickersham coming in first and second. In the second moto, Cisco was in front early, keeping up with l25cc Amateur Modified leader Kevin Carpenter for several laps. Cisco and Carpenter's second round first place finishes gave them first overall for their respective classes. . David Pingree took three out of four first places in the Mini Intermediate Modified and Intermediate Stock classes to finish with two overall wins. Pin gree, Pat McMullen
