Stephenson finished seco nd , H a lstead third, Veugeler fou rt h an d Ra nda fifth . The final moto was a battle for seco nd overa ll. Stephenson took th e ch eckered flag ahead of Halstead, Veugeler cruised to a third and Ott fou rt h. Bailey KOD AK, TN, JULY 2 Rod ney Barr , riding out of th e Barr 's Com petitio n sta ble, took top honors in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes at Foothills Sports P ark Bo th motos of th e l25-A class had Barr , Mik e Padgett a nd Danny Payn e raci ng, three abreast a t times 20 feet in th e air. The 25Occ-A class made Barr work even harder as his brief pit stop in the first mo to allowed Mike Goolsb y to savor a hard- fough t wi n. In the seco nd moto, Barr was hammered by abo ut five riders in th e first tum, spin n ing him arou nd lik e a to p . H e sta lled a nd faced back wards as the pack was long go ne. After fra n tica lly restarting his bike Barr ro de like m adman to p ass the ' en tire field in on ly th ree lap s. McConnell, lucero stars at Ascot Spdwy By Scott Da loisio G ARD EN A, CA, JUNE 30 The tele vision ca meras were rolling for ESP N's "Speedway America" at Chris Agajanian 's Ascot South Bay Stadium, and the biggest stars turned out to be Shawn McConnell and Steve Lucero. McConnell took th e Handicap main and fini shed seco nd to Luceroin th e Scratch ma in . Greg Hancock set th e early tempo in the H andica p main , but McConnell q uickly closed in for the ki ll. Hancock drifted off the pole on la p three and McConnell snatched th e lead away. McConnell seemed to have everyth in g under control but , Keith Larson fell and out came the red on lap three. The race was restarted with five laps to go a nd McConnell drove off the lin e and immediately began to establis h a commanding lead. Brant p assed H ancock on lap six for second with Bart Bast getting by H ancock for th ird. T hey closed on McConnell but he had enough, left to beat Brant and Bast by a single b ik e len gth. McConn ell got the ga te in th e Scratch main b ut Lucero a nd Lance King sandwiched him o ff in turn two for the top two p ositions. Lucero h ad a slig h t advantage as th ey hit turn th ree and h e pulled the Shoei / Oilzall/Kal-G ard/STP/ K&N .G odden to th e pole an d took sole p ossession o f th e lead. McConnell mana~ed to stave off Kin g for second u n ti l the en d of the opening orbit when Kin g eased by on the pole. Kin g tried to repass bu t Lucero was glued to th e p ipe. At the Jim Domin ic i (2Wj and David Benedetti battle in the 250cc Int erm edi at e class at Ascot. Benedetti was second overall ahead of Dom in ic i. same time McConnell was nipping at King for seco nd. Kot ajar vi, 'Conley conquer Ascot MX By Ken Faught GA RDENA, CA , JULY I Kawasaki-mounted Steven Ko tajarv i and Sean Conley pulled together four grea t motos to capture the ov erall wins in th e 125cc Interm ediate and 500cc Pro classes at Ascot's Friday night motocross. In th e first l25cc Intermedia te m o to Kevin Bussey go t the holeshot ov er Matteo Coestino, Kotajarvi , Fabricio Ci ancaglini and Da niel Bush. Bussey slowl y started to pull away from the pack with Kotajarvi struggling to get around Coestino. While most of th e attention was b ein~ focused on the Coestino/ Kotajarvi battle, Hira Yamamoto moved into fourth after a seventh p lace start. Nearing the halfway point, the battle for th e lead pi cked up as Bush and Yamamoto sta rt ed to catch the front runners, causing a five-way battle for first. The battle continued for th e remainder of the race with Bu ssey holding off Coestino for the win followed by Kotajarvi, Yamamoto and Bush. Second-mote action saw Coestino benefit from a good start to lea d Ko taja rvi , Bussey, Yamamoto a nd Ciancaglini arou n d th e first turn. Kotaj a rvi im me d ia tely sta rted to ap p ly p ressure to Coestino a n d soon in heri ted the lead as th e Cagiva pilot fell back to fifth. Bush chased Bussey for several laps wi th Bussey never su rrenduring h is positio n. On th e las t -lap Bussey's luck changed as he dropped to fourth , a llowi ng Bush a small lead over Yamamoto. Kotajarvi claimed the win over Bush , Yamamoto, Bu ssey" and Coestino. A 3-1 sco re gave Ko taja rvi the. overa ll. Bussey was seco nd with a 14 ove r Bush 's 5-2. Yamamoto finished fou rth ove r Coesti no . Craig H ofmeister hol eshot Tom Webb, Sean Conley a n d j im Kuntz for th e start o f the firs t 500cc Pro moto on ly to fall o n th e seco nd lap, surrenduring th e lead to Conley. Once in th e lead Conley had his hands full with Kuntz. wh o managed to sli p past Webb for seco nd and now ch a lle nged for the lead. At th e fin ish Conley took th e vict ory over Kuntz and Webb. H ofmei st er finis hed fourth. At th e sta rt o f th e seco nd moto Webb holeshot Hofmeister , Kuntz and Con ley. Conley quickly forced his wa y a ro u nd Kuntz a nd set a fter . Hofmeister. With two laps rem ain ing Webb looked to be in co m p lete control as the H onda-pi lo t slowly started to pull away. On th e last la p disaster struck Webb as h e pitched h is bike in a turn and dropped to fourth . Webb 's mistake moved Hofmeister to first with Conley a very close second.
