Deatherage LAU RELVILLE, O H , JUNE 26 OXNARD, CA, JUNE 26 Mark McDonald landed the Middleweigh t 50cc Expert Stock class win after some fierce battl es with Steve George and Thom as Petrus at the SRE-pro mo ted, Yamaha-sponsored mini roa d races at Oxnard's go -kart facility. . In th e first heat George p ut hi s YSR50 into th e lead at th e start and stayed there , McDon ald was putting in some seri ous challenges, but at th e checkers George had th e lead , win and pole pos itio n for the secon d heat. McDonald had to settle for secon d and Petrus followed for third. H eat two saw George once again take the lead foll owed by McDonald and H onda NSR50 rider j im Draves in third. The three riders q uickly separa ted themselves from the pack wh en th e field ran into some traffic congestio n in a tight comer. Going into the same comer o n the fifth lap, George overcooked hi s entra nce, slid ou t and had to wait for traffic to clear before re-entering th e C OUTse, leaving McDonald with th e lead . Draves now had com ma nd of second and Petru s third. On the last lap McD onald ex te n ded hi s lead wh en Draves dropped back after a tangle with ano th er rider. This ga ve second place to Petrus a nd third to J oel Randel. In Middleweigh t 50cc Novice Modified racing, Kurt H endricksen made h is first-ever mini road race an eventful on e with wins in both heat s. Peter Yurfest rode the wh eels off hi s YSR but had some back lu ck with a first- comer fall in the second heat and had to settle for second overa ll. Keith Fennell netted a thi rd overa ll for the da y. Ear l Bowlby rode the o nly En glish bike to finish in th e top five. His 7.86-second ride on a BSA was good for third. jeff Yoder edged hi s fath erin-law Lou C erencer for fourth. Yoder's tim e was 7.96 whil e C eren cer's was 8.05. . Hunter had a secre t weapon inhis XR. He had serious engine problem s, and Gerencer, his uncle, decided to put th e new motor he had built for his bike into Hunter's fram e. Wade William s won the second hillcl imb this season aboard his STP Special 800cc H onda. The HarleyDavidsons have won th e rest. Randy Gabriel ha s two wins while Yoder and Geren cer have one each. By Gordon Lunde MANITOWO C, WI, J UNE 4 Marty Bushman got his seco nd win in as ma ny weekends in AMA District 16/ Sou th ea st Shor trac kers action at th e first event ever under lights a t th e Manito woc Expo ' Center. A freshly graded tra ck proved to be very rough th e entire even ing allowing little if any passing ro om in the corne rs. If th at wasn 't en ough; dust becam e a problem later as a 10:30' curfew did not allow time for tr ack m ainten an ce to wa ter the surface. Bushman on a Harley XR-7 50, was wishing he had a sma ller bike for the 750cc Pro event as th e 750 was , spinn ing the rear tire too much under th e track co n ditio ns. The po wer did, however, put h im in th e lead fro m th e start followed by Andy Tresser on a Woods-Rotax. Steve Cham pine, also o n Rotax, gave T resser a race for second whil e Bushman built a lead. A few laps lat er Ch ampine got by Tresser and ga ve chase for th e .lead spot. Bushman had hi s hands full trying to get the H-D aroun d th e co u rse and Champine was sho rtly on his rear tire. Not being abl e to use horsepower exiting turns two and four, Bush ma n had to get into o ne and three deep to stay ' ahead. The two put o n a great show with Bushman holding on for the win. Behrens topped all I25cc Experts by) winning both 125cc A Stock and . 125cc A Modified classes. If The 125cc A Sto ck battle was , b etw een Behren s an d Kevin Popeako. Moto o ne had Behrens pull a holeshot and stre tch out a comfor - ~ 'table lead . Popeako stayed as close I as he could, bu t was o nly able to score a second. 'r.l Popeako charged into th e lead a t J the start of the seco nd moto, leaving J Behrens back in tra ffic. By th e end of th e moto, Behrens held a three-second lead. Popeako again" took second. ' .r Behren s, by winning th e first two motos, elected not to ride the third moto, leaving Popeako to battle with Shawn Huggins and Dave Brillo. I Popeako took th e win and his 2-1 score earn ed him th e second spo t overa ll. Huggins held on for second and his 2-3 scored him a third overall. ~
