That I was looking at T his Sport wi th wandering eyes, and saw w hat it.was and alwa ys shall be. I was coming home, rising up from Boston 's Logan , u p over the Charles and Common, headed wes t into a long-lingering sunset. On e after another the roads van ished in shadows. Even the In terstates became indefinite thr eads, then lost in that vast sp reading darkness belo w. The lig hts of towns turned to faint distan t pools - or fad ed orange crosses, fallen flat stars - and th e open sk y beyond was the frailest of blu e before going to black .. The cabin dimm ed, my m agazines and notepads at last put away. A nd ou r engines drone d the ir song of a m ill ion dreame d cylinders, brin gin g visions of m ot orcycles back to me throug h sleep . It so wa s viv id an d we lco me, and utterly perfect. I was riding a h igh road, catching th e w ind and all th e freedom it held. A t once part of huge Americade by New Y ork 's L ak e George, and of fervent L oudon and La conia. Lt was Ha rley's m agn ifi cent M ilwaukee R ide, that nationw ide benefit fo r Jerry's Kids, en tering the city wit h " th ousands of bikers and th ose th ron gs of greeters wavin g th eir A m erican flags. Th en it was tha t quick solo fora y I had u p in Main e - where th e woods blurred, and the N orth Country grew entra nc~ ing and endless. It was a sudden horsep ower run throug h the lush hills of Connecticu t, now a long and relaxing tour of old Cap e Cod. An impulsiv e, 'darin g ri de in to th e heartbeat of Manhatta n. T hen th at langu id ballet alo ng Pot omac's fair shores. I m otored to our Capitol, an d to the Battlefields , and to our Liberty Bell. It was th e heritage in books m ade unforgettably real, all fo rever a part of m e now. And th e airpl ane flew on, and flew on. West toward the Pacific. T oward m ore rides to come - and reu n ions with best friends f rom th e road! I was seeing th e nat ion on two wo ndrous whee ls, putting together this jigsaw of a glorious N ew Land. A nd when m y p lane brought me to fam iliar L.A ., leaving m e in its n ight and bright lig hts, I woke to th e thrill that here was Hollister and La guna, Ascot and Sacram ent o! Yeah! A II the races and roads of th e West to be ridden again ,' and again. T hat endless treat tha t never quits. Ever. Motorcycling!
