Cal ifornian Wa yne Rainey (Yam) finish ed seventh and T exan Kevin Sch wa ntz ended up eig h th after break in g toes on both feet du ring practice. La wson leads th e po int sta ndings with 142 points to Rain ey's 106. Gardner is thi rd 'with 105 followed by Kevin Magee (89) and Schwantz (85). The 250cc GP w in at Assen went to Spain's Juan Garriga (Yam), Garriga topped Jacques Cornu (Hon) and defending World Champion Anton Mang (Hon). Garriga now leads the title chase with 118 points to Sito Pons' 99. Pons (Hon) and Dominique Sarron (Hon) crashed in the final corner while racing for the lead . English roa d racer Kenny Iro ns was ki lled at Caldwell Park in Engla nd on June 26 when he ra n into the back of Keith Heuwen o n the warm-up la p for a British National. A 1988 Vance & Hines Suzuki GSXR750 Superbike sat in the pits unused at the Road America round of the AMA Superbike Series on June 26. The bike was prepped for Mike Baldwin. but the Connecticut resident left for Europe on June 26 to ride in a few select Grands Prix. Baldwin will ride a Chas Mortimer-sponsored Honda RS500 three-cylinder fitted with a camera that will shoot footage for a movie based on GP racing titled "American Made." Rick Johnson (H o n) was the big winner at the 2 1st An nual Mammoth Mountain MX held J une 24-26 in Mammoth Lakes, Ca lifornia. J o hn son started the the three-day event by winning the Open Pro class over Tyson Vohland (Kaw) and Mik e Pascarella (H o n), and ended it with the 250cc Pro win over T y Davis (Suz) a nd A.j. Whiting (H on). Jim Young. a former dirt track and road racer. and the husband of Camby Young. the daughter of promoters Don and Lulu Brymer. was shot and killed last week in Tampa. Florida , Young. an Eastem Airlines salesman. was on his way home about 2 :00 a .m, when he was shot in the stomach at a stop light. Young was able to reach the hospital but died 36 hours later.
