Rob Edwards was the Open Beginner winner at Ascot. Jeff Emig (47) grabs t he holeshot at the start of a 2 50cc A Stock mota at Goodtimes Motorsports Park.· to ge t back up to speed a nd eventu ally fell back to 12th. As the race progressed the top five .continued to change as Truj illo dropped back near Smith, surrendurin~ the number five position to Mi ch ael Esparanza. Nearing th e halfway point J ulio Miranda moved up and challenged O sman for third. Wi th only two laps remaining Mira nda jumped past Osman over a new step-up ju mp to take command of O sman 's position. On the las t . lap Ear ly lost hi s front end nearing the finish line zig-zag and dropped to third. Longergan took a narrow win over Miranda, Early, Osma n and Esparza. When th e gate dropped at the stan of th e second moto Osm an sprung out of the gate to lead Miranda, Lon ger ga n , Ea rly a nd Es parza. Longerga n swiftly snuck around Miranda the n soo n fou nd his way into th e lead as O sman faded to fourth. At the checkers Lo ngergan took the win and the overall ahead of Early, Mi randa , Osman and Esparza. In th e 250cc Pro clas s O'Neal's "Radical" Ron Turn er stol e both mota wins to ta ke home his share of th e largest purse of the nigh t. In the first mo to T urner grabbed the holesh o t with Bo b Klin e, J ohnny Posca , Rick J o hnson and Eric Sandstrom close behind. Turner slowl y pulled away as Posca challenged Kline for seco nd. Turner took the ch eckers first with Kline holding off Posca for second. In th e second rnoto Klin e benef. iued from a clean holeshot to .lead . Turner, Posca, Sandstrom and Johnson around the first turn. Within a few laps Turner found his way past Klin e in a tight S turn , taking over the lead. D omke SAN ANTONIO, ri, MAY 28-29 South Texas' no toriously u npredictable spring wea ther cooperated thi s year, providing ideal racing conditions for hundreds of top yo ung motocross riders a t the Lo ren a L ynn 's AMA South Central Regio nal Championship. Amo ng th e stando uts of th e event were the Kawasaki-moun ted Em ig brothers, J eff and Bryan , from Kan sas City . Jeff aced the 125cc A Stock event and the 250cc A Stock race. Big brother Bryan placed second in two events, the 125cc A Modified and th e 250cc A Modified, beh ind the Honda of Texas J ason Langford both tim es. In each of his four mo tos, J eff Emig, 17 go t the holesho t an d easi ly stayed o ut Iront. " T he Kawasak is are working real good this year," Em ig said. " And th e trac k is excellent, real fu n." J eff's brother Bryan, 19, had a tougher battle, but ra n well aga ins t La ngford, who won th e starts a nd stayed in front. . Stephanie Carlyle rode impressively in the Women's cla ss. Carlyle switched from Hondas to a Yamaha YZl25 , a nd dominated th e class. The petite 17-year-old T exan bested Leslie Lancaster's second place in both motos. Another rider who gave an impressive performance was Pedro Gon- zal ez from Mo nterrey. G o n za lez placed in the top five in three classes, a nd wo n first place in the 250cc B Stock. H e also took a second pl ace in the 125cc Stock and a th ird place in 125cc B Stock. The Min is were fun to wa tch, as us ua l. Texan H ea th Kirkl an d, a H onda rider, aced th e Stock clas s and came in fifth in th e Modified 85cc classes. He was one of the sta ndouts , alo ng wi th fellow Texans Will ie Bowden and J eff Dement. Bo wden won the 85cc Modified and placed fourth in the 85cc Stock. Dement too k first place in th e 85cc Stock (ages 12-13) and th e 85cc Modified (ages 9-13), In the 51cc Automatics, Carter Sch neider, also from Texas, rode his little yellow Yamaha li ke a pro, taking the jumps and sta ying well ahead of the co mpe titio n. Sao buzzes Englishtown MX By Rosanne Lukaitis E T GLISHT O WN, NJ , MAY 29 Kawasaki-mounted Ed Bao belted o ut o ne of his smoothest races th is season to tak e the victory in th e 125cc Expert clas s at Engl ishtown's Ra ceway Park. In the first rn o to Brian Carroll, aboard a Kawasaki, jumped ou t to an earl y lead and powered over th e Wood bridge Kawasaki steps. Bao, Charles Wh ite and Joe Reill y followe d closel y. Carroll started to open a large gap on th e rest of the pa ck whi le Bao went dow n and lost so me posit ions, When the checkers fell it was Carroll wh o took first as Wh ite grabbed the seco nd spot. Rounding out the top five were Baa , Dave Peron e and Joe Reilly. In th e fina l moto Bao grabbed the lead, White was right behind to apply pr essu re and Reilly was a clos e th ird. Bao raced smoo th and stead y a nd never looked back as he dominated and took first in the moto for th e overall victory. White brought home a second all ar ound followed by Reill y, J oe Montrella and Mike Culkin. Chris Brynildsen pulled down th e hol eshot in the firs t rnoto of th e 250cc Expert class. Mickey Kessler was right on Bryn ildsen's rear tire and made a pass a nd Br ian Carroll followed suit as h e m o ved into second. J erry Seip also passed in th e back section of the track to posi tio n hi mse lf into third, and Mark Costa dropped Brynildsen to fifth . Kessler put some space between himself and the rest of th e pack while Seip kept clo sin g th e door o n Costa. Kessler took th e win. Carroll was seco nd, with Seip, Costa and Phil Carlin third through fifth . Brynildsen again took th e hol eshot in th e final moto with Costa, Seip, Carroll and Kessler at his back door. Costa passed Brynildsen but Carroll got by Co sta to tak e th e lead . Kessler moved up and passed Costa, then Carroll went down and Kessler inheri ted the lead. Kessler pulled away from the rest of th e pa ck and was followed home by Seip, Costa,
