T h e Amateur divisio n was the largest of th e da y, and it was topped by J ohn Huegel , who rode his Indian to II scores. Seco nd overall went to mul t i- time w in ne r Fred Mo r k 's immacul a te ESO , whi le David Breetour ended up thi rd. Rick Na bers was fourt h on an all-stock ESO 500. Rod Lake brough t out a T riumph 650 tw in and too k home a pair of first -pl ace tro p hies. The first o ne came in th e Open Twins Nov ice class , th e second one over a 16-rider Vet Novice class fille d wi th ligh tweigh t two-strokes. La ke pos ted a 3I for th e Vet w i n o ver Maicomounted Robert Doran 's 2-2 and Mark Neal 's 4-4. One of th e largest fields of 125s ever, showed up a t Perr is, and it was a pair of Yamahas leading the way in th e Novice div ision. Jim Puree finished second to J ohn Fri gas in th e firs t moto, bu t came chargin g back halfway through m oto two to secu re the point position. Fri gas put u p a tough fight, but had to settle for second behind Puree, which al so gave P uree th e overa ll victory. Third for th e da y went to H odaka-mounted Rod Kirkbride. Vet Ex pert rivals Broussard a nd McManaway went at it again in th e 250cc Expert class , but thi s time, th ey also had to deal with Rock Oilsponsored Gary Rabe. McManaway ended th e first round ahead of Rabe, who had to make his way through the field , whic h included Amateurs, after a poor start, and Bro ussard. Bu t III race two , it was Broussard all th e way. H is 3-1 was good eno ugh for the overall, handing Rabe (2-2) his first defeat ever in the class.
