Edie, McConnell motor at Perris Historic MX By'Matt Hilgenberrg/ATV Sports P ERRIS, CA, JUNE 12 Round three of , the California Vintage Racing Group (CVRG) Historic Motocross Series was held at Perris Raceway, where Jerry Edieand Chuck McConnell captured overall wins in the Vet Expert and 250cc Novice divisions . . Dick " Bugsy" Mann also scored heavily, winning every moto he entered in three classes. Mann too k the overall wins in the 250 and 500cc Premier Expert classes as well as the Old Timer Expert class. The folks at Perris made a special track for the vintage bikes , which was much longer and smoother than the usual circui t run there and each of the 116 entrants had nothing but praise for the track layout and preparation. Edie's Vet Expert victory came via a 1-2 score. In the first rnoto Rand y Hanson put his Husky quickly to the front of the pack, but was overtaken by Yamaha 360 -mounted John McManaway halfway into lap two. Edie and Joe Brou ssard were close behind in third and fourth. Hanson had troubles in the back section of the track, which held up Edie long eno ugh for Broussard to slip into second; Edie a lso managed to pass Hanson to run third. On lap three Edie moved into second and set his sights on McManaway,leaving Broussard and Hanson to argue over third. Edie hounded th e Yamaha rider until two turns from the finish of th e five-Iapper, wh en he made room on th e outside and elbowed his way into th e lead and a victory. McManaway cruised th e final straightaway to seco nd, ahead of Broussard and Hanson. Vic Curti finished a di stant fifth on a 1973 Yamaha 360 MX. McManaway began moto two in the front, leading Edie , Broussard, Hanson and Curti. That lasted only a couple of laps until Broussard pushed his Honda CR250 into the lead over Edie and McManaway. From there, Bro ussard kept up a steady pace to the flag to take the mo to win over Edie, McMan,!way, Hanson and Curti. Edie grabbed th e overa ll ahead of Broussard (3-1) and McManaway (2-3). McConnell made easy work of bo th 250cc Novice motos, leading virtually from start to finish in each. Mike Aldrich nailed the holeshot in the first ro und, but it was McConnell 's H usky leading at the end of lap one. Aldrich stayed on McConne ll's rear fender as the duo pulled away from a race for third between Honda SL rider Jim Willis, Dan Hall and Chris Johnson. McConnell rode on to the win over Aldrich , with Hall coming in third ahead of Willis and Johnson. McConnell went wire-to-wire in th e second moto, never looking back on his way to victory: Willis, Aldrich and Hall flew in formation for the first half of the moto until Hall moved into second and away from Willis. The top three stayed in that order to th e fini sh , with Johnson bringing his CZ home fourth; Aldrich fell off the pace, but came across the line in fifth. McConnell 's I-I too k the overall trophy, with Ha ll's 3-2 second and th e 4-3 tallies of Will is good for third. Works Performance-sponsored Gil Vaillancourt holeshot rnoto one for th e Old Timer Novi ces, but it was Willis and Metz leading th e way after th e first turn. Willis stayed out from for th e entire first lap, but Metz powered his '74 CZ 250 into the lead during lap two. Metz continued to stretch his lead to the finish, where Willis took second over Vaillancourt's '73 CZ 400. Stan Woods was a distance back in fourth, with Don Mitchell fifth . Metz didn't mess around in the second race.Jeading the 12-rider field from th e onset. Willis again trailed in th e number two position, which he hel d to the end over Vaillancourt, Mitchell and Woods. His I-I moto scores easily netted Metz the overall, with Willis and Vaillancourt secon d and third. Vaillancourt also competed in the 500cc Novice d ivision , where he ended up second overa ll beh in d Ga ry Moore, wh o was riding a BSA B50. Moore went I- I to defeat Vaillanco urt and H usqvarn a rider Martin Anderso n (4-3). The hotly-con tested 500cc Arna'teur class fell to Yamaha 360 MX rider Tim Tolleson, who grabbed the checkered flag first in each rno to.
